The
Exorcist of course. I remember watching with DH and the scene where Linda Blair crabwalks backward down the steps freaked us both out big time!!
Rosemary's Baby was a totally new level of creepy.
Poltergeist was off the chain. It's the reason none of my kids ever had a clown doll!
Maybe we should get together at someone's place and watch this as a group? With a camcorder going to record all the snarky commentary... to be transcribed later, of course
Hey, don't knock it, that might be the only way I can manage to finish this damn film.

We watched Phantasm with my 10 year old tonight, in an attempt to introduce him to scary movies. It was one of the movies I saw as a kid and it scared the hell out of me so badly I hadn't seen it since. He watched The Sixth Sense with us a few months ago and I was sure that would freak him out, but it didn't. We aren't into the gore/slasher flicks, but we love a movie that screws with our minds.
I've just added Freaks to the Netflix list and we're going to watch The Sentinel tomorrow (without the kids).
We have a house guest that is really into creepy scary movies, so I was looking for a few suggestions. I figured I'd bump this thread to see if anyone has any other additions.
(and yes - The Notebook scared the hell out my 10 year old, too.)
Shutter freaked me out, and one missed call, i really want to see that new movie Taken looks really good.
SciFi was doing all the snake movies last night... Viper, Copperhead, Anaconda, etc... I watched about 4 of those B rated movies before realizing that they all had the same plot or storyline (seemingly) and it was like watching the same movie over and over again with different characters and snakes...
I did like Copperhead, though - it was like a wild west movie and the good guy got away.

I am anxiously awaiting Drag Me to Hell to come out on DVD.

I think from now on, before I watch any scary movies I'm gonna post it here and just ask if there's any graphic violence involving children ~before~ I start watching it. I don't worry about drama, I rarely ever do drama just because of that anyway.

I don't know if they're the scariest movies I've seen, but they rank really, really high on the disturb-o-meter.
Se7en and The Skeleton Key.
Se7en is just a thinking persons nightmare. It's awesome in how dirty and unclean it makes you feel. Silence of the Lambs the same way.
But those movies are the worst. No devil. No maniacal, plotting killer, like Jason or Michael Myers. Just twisted people going over the edge.
That ish can really happen.
Check out "Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer", sometime. That's the kind of stuff that'll keep you up at night.
Thinking persons nightmare. Yes.
And, that reminds me of my favorite horror movie.
For reasons unknown, it kind of flew under the radar.
But, it's a gem.
Frailty
It really blurs the line between what's good or evil, what's reality or dementia.
And, not to give away the ending, but you're left hoping that the main character is delusional.... because the alternative is far more sinister.
'Frailty' is a very good movie. I have the DVD that I borrowed recently from a friend, but haven't watched it yet. I saw it in the theaters when it came out years ago. I remember feeling as though, with a little tweaking, it could have been a GREAT movie.
But then again, I feel that way about most films.
I'll definitely run it again.
Yeah, another vote for Frailty here.
Two that I saw recently, that may not be considered all time greats, but certainly scared the crap out of me for a little bit were:
The Descent
High Tension
The Unborn. Really good movie. Loved it!

Event Horizon
A dozen years later it still gives me the horrors just from remembering.
