Thanks, trothaar. I appreciate it... I've been working around vets for several years now and have a very good connection with one of the local veterinary clinics (my best friend has been the senior tech there for the past 15 years). I try and hang around as much as possible and to pick their brains at every available opportunity.

I definitely say "go for it, BC!!!"

as the song goes (from the musical, "Rent"),
"No day but today... forget regrets.... for life is yours to live..."

I've seen too many people take the "safe route" and end up miserable when they're old... all the things they "could have done" but they didn't, because it was a risk... I saw it happen to my dad... worked his whole life (never took a family vacation with us), just working and working towards the glorious 'retirement'... he had a massive stroke 2-years before he retired, that left him paralyzed and wheelchair bound for 7 years... all those things he 'planned to do' he never got to accomplish...

don't wait - just do it! (the cliche fairy struck again!)

PS - good luck with Purdue Univ!!

    Re: Midlife Career Change

Even though I would have preferred to attend college right out of high school, I know that I am a much better student now than I would have been then.

First of all, I probably would have ended up majoring in theatre or film, which would have qualified me for exactly the same types of jobs I got with an HS diploma. As I said, some older students already have degrees, but found they didn't like their professions or (as with theatre majors) couldn't find gainful employment with those particular degrees.

Then, I would have gotten caught up in social nonsense, like a lot of kids do. As an adult, I look at this as a job, not a social opportunity. I'm not taking out tens of thousands of dollars in loans so I can make friends.

When I entered Temple, I had no idea what I was going to do with my degree. I chose math because a math degree prepares one to do many kinds of jobs. Math majors can find work right out of undergrad school, or they can go to law school, med school, veterinary school, or other graduate studies. I thought of working as an actuary, but then I took an environmental geology class and discovered a profession where I could combine my love of science with my love of the outdoors and nature.

If I had more time, I'd double-major in math and geology. The math minor is one of the most difficult and time-consuming in the university; I will be only about four classes short of making it a second major.

    Re: Midlife Career Change

    You know what's really funny?

About 16 months ago when I was looking to leave the Firm (thinking, "Anywhere but here"), I interviewed with another great firm here in town... I loved the attorneys, the working atmosphere, everything. But we were too far apart in salary requirements for me to go work for them, so we politely parted company.

Here I am, 16 months later, back at my old firm after having tried the "investment world" and found that no amount of money would make me happy there, working 7 hours a day for a smaller salary (rather than 10+ hours a day for more cash) than I saw when I left this place and that firm, the one I loved, called me back last week to offer me a job.

And I turned them down... I told the woman with whom I interviewed that I had this thing - this business on the side that I loved and this possibility of going back to school - and that I thanked them for thinking of me but right now, right now, I had so many possibilities going on that I couldn't go work for them. And you know what?

She was excited for me... And that made all the difference in the world.

And I know, I will never make the money that my contemporaries from college are now making. I will never be the doctor or lawyer or business woman that my mother always thought I should be. I have turned down offers that made my SO shake his head and say, "Are you insane?"

But I know when I am an old woman, I can sit back and think that I didn't have any regrets - I may have lived in a house with dirty carpets and I may have eeked by on little savings and I may have second-hand furniture, but in the end, I did everything I wanted to do.

Screw the money if can be truly happy. No one is really happy chasing a magical token. (money)

But it is sooo much fun when you capture a token from the "Dark Side".....

    Re: Midlife Career Change

I thought I would give you all an update...

I was accepted into the Purdue program to start this coming fall. And today, I got a letter in the mail that 8 of my previous undergraduate credit hours are transferable, so I don't have to take English (with a bachelor's degree in English, I didn't think I would have to, but there was a possibility), nor will I have to take any social science classes... So I've shaved a semester off the entire process from the start.

Now, all I have to do is go through the motions of getting an advisor and waiting for the sign-up deadline and then I can get started.

Well, and figure out a way to pay for it after the first semester...

Truthfully, Ro, I'm scared out of my mind. But, you know what? There's no time limit on how long I can take to do this, so I'm just going to start and see where the process takes me.

    That is so cool....

America is an idea, but it's an idea that brings with it some baggage, like power brings responsibility. It's an idea that brings with it equality, but equality even though it's the highest calling, is the hardest to reach. The idea that anything is possible, that's one of the reasons why I'm a fan of America. - Bono, Commencement University of Pennsylvania May 17, 2004
