Man burns house in effort to kill wasps

GREENSBORO, N.C., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A North Carolina man accidentally set his house on fire while trying to remove a wasp nest.

The Greensboro Fire Department reports Hugh Williams first tried to get rid of a wasp nest in the ground next to his home by pouring insecticide into it, The Greensboro News-Record reported Monday.

When that didn't work, Fire Marshall David Douglas says Williams placed a paper bag inside the nest and set it on fire.

The flames shot out of the ground and up an outside wall of Williams' house right into the attic, the newspaper reports.

It took firefighters 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze which caused $80,000 damage and left the house uninhabitable.

Roogle was taking a poke at the Wilson Goode comment I would guess, the Move scenario where Goode firebombed an entire city block.

As an aside, more than likey it wasn't wasps at all (unless it was a Cicada Killer). Most wasps that do nest in the ground are solitary - meaning there is no colony to speak of and unless you were watching them burrow you really wouldn't know they had even been there. More than likely it was a nest of Yellow Jackets which are bees or maybe some type of Hornet.

A further aside, if you happen to have the need to treat a ground nest for a stinging insect you have to give the materials time to work. Those that are present in the nest will die rather quickly but those that are out foraging will need to return to the nest in order to contact the persticide (this will be evident in the activity around the entrance). This is where many people make the mistake of taking further steps to address the problem, and unfortunately this can lead to problems. Also, never dig up a ground nest, treated or not.
