BLOOMBERG less than 24 hours before storm:
"We are not ordering any evacuations as of this time for any parts of the city. We’re making that decision based on the nature of this storm. Although we’re expecting a large surge of water, it is not expected to be a tropical storm or hurricane-type surge. With this storm, we’ll likely see a slow pileup of water rather than a sudden surge, which is what you would expect from a hurricane, and which we saw with Irene 14 months ago.
So it will be less dangerous – but make no mistake about it, there will be a lot of water and low-lying areas will experience flooding. The City’s Departments of Transportation and Environmental Protection will be deployed throughout the city to address flooding conditions."
"Mayor Bloomberg's press conference this morning was shocking...yesterday he was dismissing the storm, calling it less of a threat than Irene. Now he is ordering a mandatory evacuation. I disagreed and asked you yesterday to warn people you know living in southern Manhattan to get out. He could have given those poor people a better heads up than the day of!!!! Just saying." ~
Adam Joseph 6ABC Meteorologist
"The National Hurricane Center just put out a statement warning of a life-treatening storm surge, especially for Long Island and New York Harbor. Mayor Bloomburg said this will NOT be a dangerous storm and no worried about Lower Manhattan...PLEASE if you have friends or family living there, tell them to take this seriously!" ~ Adam Joseph 6ABC Meteorologist
"We are having a radio tonight f rom 830 -1130P. We will post link later today. BUT, mayor Bloomberg if you see this, come on the radio. why the hell are you lying to the public just like you did with the last blizzard? the forecasted surge is the same! that has not changed but now you all of a sudden changing your tune! Most ppl will go to work tomorrow? good one mayor! I warned ppl on here for days about this but you just want to keep the city open no matter what! Come on mayor, come on our radio show! lets talk the truth! "- Adam (Tri-State Weather)
"Again if you live in zone A and/or under a mandatory evacuation, leave your area. Mayor Bloomberg has no clue what the heck he is talking about. The on-shore flow will be long lasting, full moon means a possible 5-10 FT rise in water! this is very dangerous! Do not wait for Bloomberg to translate in spanish. Do not wait until bloomberg wants to ban Kit kats, breathing too much, etc. In all seriousness you need to get out in those areas, NOW!"- Adam (Tri-State Weather)
An open message from a close friend of ours and Chief Meteorologist at CBS NY, Craig Allen on just how serious this is:
"I doubt I will be able to be on line much today; double duty. And I doubt I will have electricity beyond tomorrow. Yes, I have a brand new generator hooked up to the panel but it won't mean a thing since I am in a mandatory evacuation neighborhood. I admit it; I'm frightened. I
had all the confidence in the world with Irene and stayed to see the devastating flooding but was unscathed. I have never seen the likes of this and have no mental image to go on as to what it could be like; I will get the family out after observing what Monday morning's high tide is like.
This area has NEVER BEEN THROUGH ANYTHING like this. That includes the 1938 LI Express and the perfect storm. NEVER has a hurricane moved west towards LI/NYC/NJ.
Listen to public officials except the stupid know-it-all ones. Don't be fooled by the utter nonsense of the NHC stopping official warnings from them because of technicalities in the storm.
Sandy is still a hurricane and already intensified more- down to 28.08 inches. Still a central core of thunderstorms firing up while over the Gulf Stream. Yes, that will stop instantly once the westbound bend begins and puts her in 60° ocean waters. However, the baroclinic process could possibly keep her as intense as a Cat 1 with gusts to Cat 2.
Everything you are reading about major inundation from record tidal flooding, river flooding and power outages lasting a week or more may come true. The Hudson and Delaware R will likely flood from ocean water backed up. LI Sound will see record tidal piling on its west end inundating parts of the boros too. The Battery will be submerged and as you know all mass transit stops at 7pm.
Ocean waves may approach 30 feet !!!!!! 5-10 footers on LI Sound."
Just google "Bloomberg NYC evacuations or Hurricane Sandy", etc to see the time progression of his actions or lack of actions. I was ready to drive up to NYC and pick up people to bring them to Delaware. Long story, short... I didn't. I wish I had now. (They are safe and just checked in at the London NYC Hotel in mid Manhattan). Now I have to see when I'll be able to drive up there.... my window of opportunity has closed.
Most of the above bits were from a list compiled by Tri-State Weather's website. They were having serious issues with the way NYC officials were handling Sandy. I tried to access some of the news agencies that I was following but their sites are down. Bloomberg didn't give people enough time to plan and he was reluctant to pull the trigger on declaring this storm as a serious threat. Bloomberg was concerned with the titles "hurricane" and "tropical storm" without realising that the pressure (millibars/mb) is what he should've been following.
