WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- Delaware's senior U.S. senator is flexing his muscles as he campaigns for re-election, apparently trying to allay any voter concerns about his health.
Sen. Tom Carper, goaded by Delaware's lieutenant governor at a Democratic gathering Monday night, jumped on a table and performed several push-ups to the delight of chanting onlookers.
Alex Pires, a wealthy lawyer and businessman who is challenging Carper, has suggested that the 65-year-old lawmaker has a serious health issue, perhaps Parkinson's disease.
Pires said he thought Monday's stunt, which was caught on video, was "sad" and nothing more than a "dog trick." He reiterated his call for Carper, seeking his third term in the Senate, to release his medical records.
A Carper campaign aide brushed off accusations that the senator is in ill health as "silly."
