Peanut Butter Recall Includes Major Retailers

WASHINGTON (AP) - A New Mexico company has expanded its recall of peanut butter and almond butter to include cashew butters, tahini and blanched and roasted peanut products.

Sunland Inc. sells its nuts and nut butters to large groceries and other food distributors around the country. The company recalled products under multiple brand names after salmonella illnesses were linked Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, one of the brands manufactured by Sunland.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there are now 30 illnesses in 19 states that can be traced to the Trader Joe's product.

The recall includes nut products from Whole Foods Market, Target, Fresh & Easy, Giant Food, Harry and David, Stop & Shop Supermarket Company and several others.

Re: Peanut Butter Recall Includes Major Retailers

Last year, we were told that the peanut crop was going to be dreadful because of drought/and or flooding. Peanut butter went up a dollar or more a jar. And then everybody jumped into the peanut growing game because they knew prices were going to be high.

Over the last month, those $3.69 jars of peanut butter have gone down to $2.00. Hell, I got 6 jars a couple weeks ago for $1.69, cheapest it's been in a year. And I suspect the prices are going to plummet even more due to a combination of retailers charging too much to meet demand and having a shit ton of surplus inventory, and so many growers who jumped into the game figuring the price would remain high for awhile. Prices were due to drop like a stone.

Just makes me find this recurring news nugget (this is the second time I've heard this same story in 4 weeks) to be... interesting.
