    Re: Cabelas coming to Delaware

I feel like when Cabelas first opens, I'll get all these delusional ideas about camping and enjoying nature, and roasting marshmallows, and I'll go to the store and open a charge card and spend $300 on stuff that I'll have every intention of using, but never use.

    That's just how I roll.

Well, Jessica, if Senator Tom Carper succeeds in getting President Obama to declare Delaware's 1100 acre Woodlawn Trust property in Brandywine Hundred (part of the First State historic park) a national monument then your Cabelas shopping spree will pay off handsomely. There'll be plenty of natural woodland beauty to hike and camp out in under the autumnal stars.

We always intend to do the camping thing, and honestly it's something I enjoy, but it never happens. I love fishing, camping, hiking, canoeing, tubing, and boating, but with two young kids at home it's almost impossible. Just getting them packed up and prepped for the pool is a long process. Our summer vacation at the beach was exhausting - chasing after them, comforting them when they went to sleep in a strange place, getting them acclimated to a new routine. And that was when we rented a house.

If they weren't so young, and weren't so close in age, maybe we'd have better results. We're considering popping up our tent in he backyard for a night this fall, but our three-year-old is very sensitive to sounds and scares easily. Someone can slam their car door down the street, and she's awake and upset.

Maybe I'll try to stave my Cabelas shopping spree for a few years and actually get some use out of what I buy!

Nice idea. It brings to my mind some fond Indian-summer memories of camping out in my own backyard, setting up a army surplus pup tent , a small campfire for telling stories around while the flickering flames snap the gathering dark of twilight, and even propping up a box telescope(a prize that I won in a Boys' Life contest long time ago) and gaze upwards at the moon and stars. Perhaps, your youngest will be more comfortably excited with her other siblings and Mom to share the new adventure.

As a kid, I was fearless and totally in love with nature. I would have happily spent the night outside without a tent from the time I was five or six. My guys are a bit younger, but I'm hoping they eventually get to that point. I was the kid with bare feet, jumping off dead logs into creeks in West Virginia, helping my Grandma shuck beans and corn, pushing crab pots into the bay, pulling leeches off my friends after we decided to lounge in a tidal pool, spending every summer day outside from eight in the morning until my Mama called for dinner.

I wish that I could guarantee my kids the same kind of childhood, but I don't know that I can. My Mama felt safe sending me off to play on my own (but with my younger brother in tow, who was always a foot taller than me) and never thought twice about my safety - aside from my own dumb choices.

It's sad to think that my guys might have to experience things in the safety of our backyard, or at least with an adult present, but I don't have that same comfort that previous generations had.

    Sorry for the tangent!

I can't help thinking about something Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz. If you can't find what you're looking for in your own back yard then maybe you never lost it to begin with. I'm sure as your kids grow older , more limber and rangey , they'll show you that their own native-born fearlessness and enthusiasm will spring free. Any good climbing trees in the neighborhood? Someday you might be idlly gazing out the kitchen window and there they'll be down at the creek building a make-shift raft of driftwood, old 55 gallon metal drums and marlin twine. The kids will pull a Huck Finn on the Brandywine Creek right before your astonished eyes.

Yeah that's it blame it on the WIFE!!! These stores are seriously cool though. We traveled down to the one in Maryland a few years ago to get my dad a massive tackle box that we couldn't find any where else. They do have some really awesome supplies. I bet Dick's Sporting Goods won't last very long once this place goes in.

Cabelas will take a bit of the Outdoors stuff away, but Dicks Sporting Goods, will still thrive with all the Sports stuff that Cabelas don't do. Some people will still stay loyal to Dicks Sporting Goods though, so Im Sure they will still make it, plus I think it will also help on ease of getting to and from Cabelas. Sometimes that plays a part of what store I will go to. If It's easier to get in and out of a store that typically charges a few bucks more, I'll still go there and pay the higher price. Just for ease of use, but that is just me.

Beau if Senator Tom Carper would of actually answered some questions at the meeting about the Woodlawn Trust Property recently. Instead of making it more of a political agenda, then he would have a ton more support. He still has the support for it, but if another meeting goes like the last on, he may just lose some support. Which sucks, because thre sure coud be some more awesome MTB trils. Dont call it a Q and A if your not really going to take questions, let alone give any answers. For the record, pretty sure he was not he only one that did ht at the meeting, was a big disappointment.

    Bellicose,
if Senator Tom Carper would of actually answered some questions at the meeting about the Woodlawn Trust Property recently. Instead of making it more of a political agenda, then he would have a ton more support
The news reporter at the meeting appeared to have a much more positive take on the proceedings than you.
Organizers said that the massive showing at the hearing, where 125 were expected but nearly five times that amount showed up, certainly helped the effort and showed community support.
“This is really incredible,” said U.S. Rep John Carney in his opening remarks.
U.S. Sen. Tom Carper said the turnout was beyond his wildest dreams. He has been pushing for a national park for Delaware for years and is credited with getting the current proposal together.

    Re: Cabelas coming to Delaware

When I get back home I will copy and paste a comment or two from the Delaware Trail spinner, who were there in full force.. Because the National Park would be huge for the MTB community in the area. Can't do it on my phone, well probably can, but too lazy to do it. Would do it on the iPad but they want like $18 for WiFi, uh NO! Not with the price I'm paying for a room, that stuff should be free. Sorry rant over.

    Re: Cabelas coming to Delaware

Sorry to get this off topic, but here it is Beau..... It seems all the reporter was saying, that the turnout was fantastic, and way bigger then they expected. The people who live in the area want the NP, pretty much so they can say that they have a NP behind them.

Thank you to all the mtbers who attended the gathering about the Woodlawn National Park matter yesterday evening. Unfortunately, rather than it being a dialogue with a true questions and answers, it was merely a pep rally for political agendas shoving a National Park agenda down our throats, with a side of political achievements, history lessons and ample lip service by the panel of decision makers (Sen. Carper, Sen. Coons, Rep. Carney, Blaine Phillips (The Conservation Fund), John Jarvis (Director - National Park Service), and one other gentleman who didn't say a word). We left the auditorium having received an extensive history lesson on the Brandywine Valley, but with few (no?) solid answers to any of our questions. However, it was still good that we were there, because now hopefully we recognize the importance of us being involved in this political process, and coming together to form a unified front as mountain bikers.
Here is another quote from one of the Trail Spinners....

Dear Senator Carper: Great National Park pep rally last night. Thanks for (NOT) answering a single question that matters about this National Park stuff. If you're just looking for a pat on the back, let us know next time so we can stay home with our families.
and here is the comment on that quote just above.....

Insert "Dog and pony show" here......
It's really starting to sound like if they get the NP, they are going to take away some (if not all) MTB trails, or not leave them in a more natural single track state. Which is a bad idea, only because those trails are some great ones. IF you take them away, they are only going to lose support, a lot of support. All they are asking for is some answers on what their plans are for the trail system that is already well established in there. The decision would be up to the person that they put in charge of the NP, and if they don't like MTB'ers then, we won't be allowed to ride there anymore. But like I already said, they are already very well established MTB trails. So why leave the chance of it being taken away. Just tell us that they are going to stay and be there forever, and we will be allowed access any given time, except for night rides that are approved. Allow the Trail Spinners to maybe add some natural features, and maybe add some more trails, that are not going to damage the area, and will look natural tot he NP. Then I can guarantee anyone involved, the support system will grow exponentially, that statement is coming straight from me.

The question had been raised numerous times throughout the entire process to get a National Park for Delaware. You should remember that Senator Tom Carper is beholden to all his constituency. He may personally enjoy the TrailSpinners favorite activity too, but he must also balance the concerns of nature-loving citizens who worry about the continuing health of a very old natural ecosystem preserve.

As I do agree with the balancing of the concerns. The trails that are already there, should remain there, and still be allowed to be used for MTB. IF you don't want new ones, or any natural looking features added to them, then so be it. But, don't take them away. That is the biggest concern, that apparently is not being addressed.
