Apple Slices Recalled Due to Listeria Danger

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sliced apples distributed to fast-food and grocery chains nationwide are among packaged products being recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

No illnesses have been reported, but listeria was found on equipment used to produce apple products by Missa Bay LLC, owned by Ready Pac Foods Inc. of Swedesboro, N.J.

Packaged apple slices distributed to McDonald's and Burger King in some states are included in the recall as are packaged food containing apples distributed to Wawa convenience store and Wegman's grocery chains and some "Ready Pac" products.

Recalled products have use-by dates of July 8 through Aug. 20. Missa Bay announced the voluntary recall on Friday, saying the food went to 36 states and the District of Columbia. People may contact Ready Pac at 800-800-7822 or visit www.readypac.com

About 4-years ago, a retired friend of mine dropped his website host because they eliminated his ability to delete email in bulk by clicking a “select all” box.

Of course, he never bothered to explain the reasons for his displeasure to the hosting site’s customer service—he lost his right hand in an automobile accident when he was 52-years old.

It’s no big deal for me to select the first item for deletion; hold down the shift key while scrolling down to the last item for deletion; and then just click delete.

As well, I can just as easily select the first item for deletion, hold down the control key while scrolling though the list and clicking on various non-sequential items, and then click delete.

However, I have two fully functioning hands; my fellow retiree had only one. I even tried some bulk deletions using one hand only. Talk about Biblical revelation!

I’m not picking on your response, PG, because I’ve read enough of your posts to know when you’re using tongue-in-cheek. But, your reply slammed my curiosity meter’s needle to the right.

I began searching sites for information on the number of cases where the use of one’s hands would be restricted or outright impossible. The number of sites is too long to list here.

On top of this, it took me about two hours, using manual extrapolation, to segregate upper extremity problems which have a direct bearing on the use of one’s hands from lower extremity problems which have no bearing at all.

I gathered my numbers using quick and cursory extrapolations, a process I consider a bit statistically sloppy However, the number of people, in this country alone, who have lost the effective use of one or both hands due to varying reasons, totaled about 3.3-million.

If I state this number as a percent of the total U. S. population, it means that approximately 1 in every 95 people would have difficulty slicing their own apples—ranging from not-worth-the-effort to downright impossible.

And, if I state the number as a percentage of only the adult population (18-years old and over), it means that approximately 1 in every 72 people face the problem.

The last place I checked—and it was simply a last-minute thought—was the Department of Health and Human Services. They keep tabs on these matters and if they’re to be trusted, 2.7-million Americans have had upper extremity problems. Accordingly, their meter pegs at 1 in every 114 people experiencing some degree of difficulty in slicing their own apples.

So NOW you know, PG. If you’re ever at a party and this topic comes up, you’ll be ready. On the other hand, if you’re ever at a party and this kind of crap comes up, you should bail out IMMEDIATELY!

Why yes, I was being tongue-in-cheek. Considering your well-thought-out and highly analytic response, however, I should point out that there are about 50,000 infomercials playing on television (both broadcast and cable) at any given time. A good percentage of them (let's say 7%) are for kitchen gadgets designed to let you one-handedly create perfect slices/wedges/sticks of whatever fruit or vegetable tickles your palate's fancy when the cravings hit... and all of a sudden I miss Billy "NO INDOOR VOICE!" OK! OK! Call off the jam. I only wish you had been this clear in your original reply. I would gladly have conceded your point immediately: people are either too lazy to slice their own apples or they’re too cheap to purchase a mechanical device to do it for them.

Re: Apple Slices Recalled Due to Listeria Danger

They're definitely targeted towards kids or people who provide lunches with kids especially those who can't bite into whole apples yet. They don't brown by lunchtime like apples sliced at 6am will, and they're included in a lot of meals for kids at restaurants and possibly even in bag lunch and breakfasts for kids at schools and camp programs. I bought a pack of them last summer for a long car ride followed by a week of vacation where I wasn't sure what kind of cutlery we were looking at in our rental. As you might imagine, they tasted like highly preserved apples and I hate the thought of feeding kids whatever it is they coat those suckers with, so I didn't buy them again.

Never underestimate the convenience factor - for a lot of busy parents that are still looking for healthy and quick snack options, what might be viewed as laziness to others is actually just one small thing towards keeping our sanity.

Ha that place is right near my work.

They usually put them in Happy Meals for a healthier option to fries, if asked for them only though. Wifey buys them, only for the purpose of one that was sliced this morning is not brown by lunch. As of lately she just takes a knife to work to cut it.

Chase, let me know how that worked out with one hand. Pretty sure tat metal would dig into your hand pretty good. I know we have one, but it's not thin type metal on top, thik it has one thick plastic on top.

Just FYI if you want apple slices to last longer and not brown as quickly spray them with a little lemon juice then sprinkle some cinnamon on them. The lemon juice will keep them from going brown super quickly and the cinnamon helps cover any lemon juice residual flavor. I've found if I slice fruit and put it out the kids eat it more often. Finger food on the kitchen counter is much easier than.....gasp....God forbid....they actually open the fridge and take it out Since mine are teens now they seem to pick and graze through the day as they run through from the pool or where ever.......I so can not wait for school to start.

I use lemon juice, but for some reason I found that if you use the lemon juice but then bag the fruit it still eventually browns. Something about the moisture? No idea, but I do that with fruit trays and everything.

To be honest, I haven't bought many apples lately. I think I've been so enticed by the berries and seasonal stuff that I rarely even make it over to where the apples are! I wish growing fruit was as easy as growing vegetables. I want to try some berries next year, but I need a banana tree, a vineyard, and an orchard too. Out guys will eat a pint of strawberries a day, a two pound bag of grapes, a small bunch of bananas, and tons of Clementines in a single weekend, and they're little. By the time they're school-aged they're going to be taking down $50 of produce a week, easily.

Jess I never tried the lemon juice and then put the slices in a bag, so good to know thanks. I love when Milburn Orchards has apples in season. We go there almost weekly. They do have berry picking too, along with other fruit trees. You can sign up for their email notice which is nice too. My kids go in phases with fruit. We usually keep bananas, grapes and some apples, navel oranges when they are on sale. Lately I've been getting a lot of berries too. I've been loving the blueberries this year. My oldest just got braces so I haven't bought as many apples the last few months. Another fruit the kids and hubby were really into this summer was plum tomatoes! I got them in huge containers from BJ's and they ate them by the hand full. The only thing that drives me absolutely crazy is when I buy a bunch of fruit and they just let it sit. Makes me so mad! That's why I started just cutting stuff up and setting it on the counter. If it's out they'll usually pick at it at least

Thanks Max, that's a great idea. I can't wait for fall when I start making a lot of apple pies. My birthday present last year was an apple peeler I can't wait to use for pies. With my arthritis it was getting so painful to peel and slice apples for a crap load of pies. I'd love to make a bunch of pie filling and can it some time too. When apples are in season at Milburn I can spend $70 - $80 in apples just for pies.

Nope. I have one too, and I've tried. You need a lever-based mechanism for maximum application of force.
