    Your summer soundtrack

It's sad to think of summer as nearing its end, but we're about a month out from Labor Day.

What songs have you been listening to this summer? Are there any songs (new or old) that have become ingrained in your psyche as belonging to the summer of 2012?

    Re: Your summer soundtrack

This is a good question, but I tend to listen only to CD's and avoid the radio at all costs, so the songs I've been listening to wouldn't be considered summer songs per se. I have been listening to the latest Matt Skiba & The Sekrets album for the last two weeks so I guess that may qualify as my summer soundtrack

One song I know I've heard a lot of when talking to other people as that awful Call Me Maybe song, or whatever its called, though I have no idea if that is considered a summer song.

Oh, just thought of another one I like: "Some Nights" by fun.

America is an idea, but it's an idea that brings with it some baggage, like power brings responsibility. It's an idea that brings with it equality, but equality even though it's the highest calling, is the hardest to reach. The idea that anything is possible, that's one of the reasons why I'm a fan of America. - Bono, Commencement University of Pennsylvania May 17, 2004

This summer I've been listening to a lot of Beach House, Alabama Shakes, and The Walkmen. But, I agree that the Fun song "We Are Young" or whatever it's called, will probably always remind me of this summer. And that godforsaken Gotye song that I heard 1,000 times.

Hey Jessica , I couldn't resist trying one of your 'summer selections. Alabama Shakes , "Hangin' Loose' is pretty cool. http://youtu.be/sWG-n0CXnrg I'm still stuck a little in my Hy Lit / Jerry Blavat hit parade selections (I do like thinking of good old summer memories down at the Jersey Shore. The Toys, "A Lover's Concerto", http://youtu.be/FmJ1AqtTuyo

I do love that song. The album is great, if you're into that southern blues twinged kind of thing. They get a lot of comparisons to Big Brother & Holding Company since their lead singer has that Joplin-esque growl to her voice.

If you're into the Blavat era stuff, check out JD McPherson, he's a young guy from Oklahoma (I think) who used to be in a punk band, but is now playing rockabilly oldies type stuff - upright bass, stomp boards. And his voice is incredible. He records on older equipment for an authentic sound - think Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, etc.

Awesome! It's a great album. I heard an interview with him on NPR and I was blown away by the stuff he was putting out. Not my usual cup of tea, but it was so well done that I bought the CD that afternoon and it's been in heavy rotation ever since. I didn't have a lot of exposure to that area of music - growing up my Dad listened to classic rock type stuff, and my Mom was a folkie and 80's new wave fan. Now as an adult I'm trying to cover all the bases I missed.
