A 34-year-old Newark-area woman charged with trying to sell her weeks-old son to a Philadelphia man for $15,000 last summer pleaded guilty today in Wilmington's New Castle County Superior Court.
Bridget Wismer was going to take the money 55-year-old John Gavaghan gave her for the infant boy, according to prosecutors, and take her other children to Disney World. She pleaded guilty but mentally ill to falsifying a certificate of birth.
Gavaghan pleaded guilty to the same charge at an afternoon hearing today.
The two will be sentenced in August. They both face up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Wismer was charged in October with selling her baby, born Aug. 31, to Gavaghan. She and Gavaghan, who has a criminal record, also were charged with falsifying the child's birth certificate because Gavaghan was improperly listed as the child's birth father.
Wismer made national headlines following the charges. She even appeared on the Nov. 4 broadcast of the "Dr. Phil" syndicated television show to proclaim her innocence.
Wismer said the criminal charges against her were the result of a misunderstanding and that she thought the arrangements she made with Gavaghan were proper. Wismer previously ran afoul of the court when she skipped a mandatory meeting with a pre-trial officer in early October and drove without a license, according to court records.
She ended up serving several days in prison until she could post $25,000 bail. Her case was scheduled for trial Tuesday.
