Amazon.com has begun hiring for its planned 1.2 million-square-foot fulfillment center now under construction on the west side of Middletown.
Recent postings on the internet retailer’s job sites seek candidates for more than a dozen positions, ranging from $11.25-an-hour warehouse associate to $50-an-hour senior operations manager.
The $90 million product-shipping facility is expected to employ 850 by November and up to 2,500 seasonal employees for two- to three-month periods twice a year.
State grant application records show that Amazon will pay about $11 an hour to about 700 members of its regular work force, with higher rates for technicians and top managers.
Middletown’s fulfillment center, located southeast of U.S. 301, across from the Wal-Mart Supercenter, will be more than five times larger than Amazon’s similar operation in New Castle, which employs 350 people.
The site on 76 acres is being built with the help of taxpayer funds, including nearly $7.5 million in state grants, as well as a $1 million tax abatement deal between Amazon and Middletown.
The state economic development funding includes a $3.47 million grant package from the Delaware Strategic Fund to support job creation and the project’s capital expenditures.
Just over $2 million of that package is linked to jobs, and will be disbursed in two stages. The first will be paid when Amazon has hired a minimum of 425 full-time permanent employees.
“The final payment would be made upon certification by Amazon has hired the balance of 424 additional new, full-time permanent employees for the new facility and has achieved and maintained a total full-time, permanent employee level of 849 for a period of 90 days,” according to the Delaware Economic Development Office.
In addition, Amazon — with the town of Middletown as its sponsor — has been approved for up to $4 million in grant money from the New Jobs Infrastructure Fund. That grant will be used to build extensions of public roads to serve the project, improve traffic flow and provide access to additional properties for future economic development.
None of the grant money has been disbursed yet.

I know it is pretty much the same as what I do, but really that is it???? Geesh what do the Supervisors and Managers make that over see them???

To think I had given it a little thought before, way closer to home, could practically ride my bike to work. But now, not even a chance. I would probably need something higher up just to stay the same.

Yeah even with the next step up, I still could not do it. Need more then that, quite a bit more. That's even with figuring in cutting down on gas.

These are typical of the types of jobs being created in the U.S.: low-level, dead-end service positions.

The article says that out of 850 employees, 700 will make ~$11.00/hour. My guess is that, out of the remaining 150, most of them will earn $15.00/hour or less. One or two senior execs will make the grand prize of $50.00/hour.

It makes me angry that I'm being forced to pay for Amazon's warehouse. Amazon is a billion-dollar corporation; why can't it pay for its own warehouse? Why should it be MY problem to pay for what Amazon needs? If I'm supposed to be on my own, pulling my own weight, is it not fair for me to expect them to pull their own weight? How much of my money is Amazon entitled to steal?

Sorry COL, our country has been headed for this for the last 30 years. Manufacturing has been shipped out due to our citizens needing too big a salary just to make ends meet.

Started with Reagen and the busting of the unions. Thru Clinton/Gingrich, Nafta. On into the 21st century. I've been hearing for the last 12 years, " we're a service economy now".

Really a shame, but hey, the corps are doing great. Hope you have some stock.

Healthcare costs have also played an enormous role. While taxes are high in countries with socialized medicine, I'm guessing that the increase in taxes is, for a business, more than offset by the fact that they don't have to provide health insurance (or workers' compensation, or anything else). It must be, or they wouldn't be fleeing the U.S.

That's not an argument for socialized medicine, but it is an argument that simply repealing ObamaCare isn't enough. The employer-based system is killing jobs.

We are a service economy, now, and the solution is to make it easier for people to start their own service businesses. You'll never make any money making lattes at someone else's shop, but you can make a good living if you own your own shop.

And here's a great example of why simply raising the minimum wage won't help:

If Amazon's stock people earn $20.00/hour, books that now cost $5.00 will cost $10.00 or more.

Of course if you double the price sales will drop off and they will lay workers off.

    Yes, it's a vicious circle.

A lot of people claim that lowering taxes will create jobs. While I will never argue against lowering taxes, low taxes don't create jobs. Demand does. If I've got a business with no customers, I won't hire anyone even if my tax rate is zero. Why would I hire people if there is nothing for them to do?

Demand is the true "job creator."

    Well COL, if you had a business with no customers, I'd say prayers were in order:}
