Delaware State Police are investigating an accident May 30 when a Lewes Fire Department ambulance struck a vehicle driven by a state trooper.
The ambulance was responding to an emergency at Cape Henlopen State Park with its lights activated at 11:07 a.m. as it approached the intersection of Savannah Road and Gills Neck Road, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
The ambulance was eastbound on Savannah Road and proceeded through a red light at Gills Neck Road when the state trooper driving an unmarked 2006 Chrysler Sebring police car northbound on Gills Neck Road continued through the green light, Fournier said.
The ambulance hit the left front of the Sebring, causing the car to spin and come to a stop on the eastbound sidewalk, he said.
The trooper, 48, was treated and released from Beebe Medical Center. Ambulance driver James E. Vanvorst, 39, of Milton was not injured.
Traffic from Savannah Road to Front Street near the canal bridge was impacted for more than an hour, Fournier said.
The emergency at Cape Henlopen State Park turned out to be a water rescue involving a 9-year-old boy from Smyrna.
Park Chief Wayne Kline said the boy was at the beach with a group of people swimming near the main bath house. The group summoned a lifeguard over after they found the boy lying at the shoreline. Kline said he did not know if the boy washed ashore with a wave or whether someone pulled him out, but the boy had taken in a lot of water.
The lifeguard followed rescue procedures and the boy continued to cough up water, Kline said.
An ambulance took the boy to Beebe Medical Center where he was treated following the incident
