Accomack man says pay for injured cow not enough
Thought I'd post this for y'all upstaters.
ACCOMAC -- A Hopeton man was granted compensation from Accomack County for injuries inflicted on his milk cow by a pack of wild dogs under a little-known section of state law.
Matt Cormons requested the maximum amount allowed by the law, $400, in a letter to the Board of Supervisors, saying feral dogs have been a problem on his farm for many years.
"Our cow is a very important part of the life we chose to live on our nearly self-sufficient farm in Hopeton, our main reason for moving to Accomack County over 25 years ago," he wrote.
A pack of dogs originating from the nearby Dreamland 2 mobile home park attacked the cow early on Feb. 9 and left her with a badly torn udder and other injuries, he said. He submitted photos showing the injuries.
He heard barking at dawn and went out to investigate, finding the cow "in the middle of our pond with the dogs surrounding her from the land," he said.
He shot one dog with a .22 rifle and the others scattered, heading toward Dreamland 2.
Cormons said the amount allowed by law does not "even begin to pay for her medications and the average of 1.5 hours a day to care for her" since the attack.
He said he and his wife in the past have also lost goats and chickens to wild dogs but have not made claims for compensation for those.
Supervisor Jack Gray, whom Cormons first called about the situation, made the motion to compensate him according to the law and also to urge Animal Control officers to continue trapping efforts to capture stray dogs in the trailer park, as well as "any other dogs that are wild and unvaccinated." The motion was approved unanimously.

DOesn't matter where they came from, those dogs attack your cow on your property, you have every right to shoot every last one of them sumbitchs.
Everyone is responsible for their own happiness.
