    Butter,mayo,mustard etc.

Do you buy jars that cause you to use a butter knife when you spread these? or do you buy a squeeze jar?

    My question is

If you use a knife to spread them, what do you do with the excess thats left on the knife? Wipe it off on a towel? or the rim of the jar? or wash it down the sink or are you that anal retentive person who only spreads out what they need?

Wipe it on the rim of the jar. Hate squeeze things.

Uh Oh Max, I guess I'm one of those AR people or maybe just experienced enough to judge the right amount. Mayo, Hellman's only BTW, in a jar (sandwiches) and squeeze bottle (hamburgers only) and spicy brown mustard in a squeeze bottle, usually squeeze out the right amount. If not, wipe on a paper towel and keep going.

I have both kinds of containers, depending on what it is. Squeeze bottles for ketchup, mustard and special mayo (Chipote Mayo ftw!). My mayo right now is also in a squeeze container. Generally, I know how much I need when I'm dipping a knife or a spoon into a container, but I do tend to 'clean' the knife on the other piece of bread, too. When I make fluffer-nutters (Hi, my name is Terri and I'm in my late 30s and still love fluffer-nutters from time to time), I spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread, clean off the knife on the other and then use the same knife to liberate the marshmallow fluff from it's container, taking the exact amount that I need to complete my sandwich.

I like the squeezable containers for the kids, especially. I cannot stand finding stray crumbs in my condiments. Blech.

I'll cop to the tongue method for strawberry jam or peanut butter.

I usually intentionally overshoot the amount of peanut butter, jelly, and (especially) Nutella that I need when I use a knife just so I can lick off all the extra. Things I don't like - mayo for instance - I'll wipe on the rim of the jar and then just wash the knife or spoon. Ketchup and mustard are always squeeze bottles for me. I guess people just don't use enough of it at once to warrant a wide mouth jar.

We buy both squeeze bottles and jars. so half the time it's the knife-spreading method. However, I HATE when other people wipe the excess on the rim, I'll actually take it off the edge of the jar and throw it out rather than risk eating it.

I prefer to take a little at a time with the knife and spread it gently.
