An 81-year-old Lewes man is dead after his vehicle crashed into a Sussex West home Monday morning.
Edward Legenski was driving a 2010 Toyota Sienna westbound along Route 9 at 8:52 a.m. when he began swerving into oncoming traffic, said Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
He drove between two barrier trees along Route 9 and between two Sussex West homes on Whitehaven Way before crashing into the garage of a home at 23 Whitehaven Way.
Neighbor Nelson Torres was home at the time and said he saw the whole thing.
"I was sitting in my living room folding clothes when I saw the car come from 9, go between the two trees and hit the garage," Torres said.
The people who live in the home were home when Legenski's Sienna crashed into their garage, Torres said. Their vehicle was parked in the garage, he said. Legenski's vehicle pushed their car through the back of the garage; other items stored in the garage spilled into the side yard.
Torres said the homeowners were elderly and were taken to the hospital for a check up, although neither of them was directly injured from the crash.
Legenski was taken to Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
