Police Seize 11 Pounds Of Marijuana From Delaware Home

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - New Castle County Police say they found a marijuana growing operation in a home from which they seized more than 11 pounds of the drug. Officers were called to the home Wednesday and say they found marijuana plants, pots, lights and fertilizers in the basement. A search warrant was obtained and police also seized an indoor irrigation system, fans and the marijuana. Twenty-eight-year-old William Farrell of New Castle has been charged with possession of marijuana, maintaining a drug property and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on unsecured bond.

more detials from the news journal

A Holly Oak-area man faces felony drug charges after police found a marijuana-growing operation in the basement of his suburban home.

William Farrell, 28, of the 2200 block of Garfield Ave. in Gwinhurst, was charged after nearly 11 pounds of marijuana -- including seven plants -- were seized, along with growing, packaging and smoking paraphernalia, New Castle County Police Cpl. John Weglarz Sr. said Wednesday.

"It's definitely one of the larger operations we've found," Weglarz said.

The marijuana has an estimated street sale value of at least $20,000, he said.

Police initially went to Farrell's home Feb. 22 to check on another resident who contacted authorities on an unrelated matter, Weglarz said, and the marijuana was discovered during that visit.

Investigators later confirmed that Farrell, who was not home during the first visit, was the homeowner, and then got a warrant to search the house, Weglarz said.

Executing the warrant, police seized the bulk of the marijuana, live plants, irrigation and lighting systems, fans and fertilizer. They also confiscated plastic bags, flower pots, smoking pipes and how-to books for growing marijuana, he said.

Every time there was news of a drug bust, my father would make the same joke-- "Oh no, that's really gonna drive prices up!"

In that vein, he also used to joke that one should only get married after 30--- and then only if the kids approve. In his era, this was considered hilarious. I wonder what he'd have thought of a trivia piece on this morning's news that showed a marriage proposal delivered via a huge roadside billboard featuring a picture of the couple's six year old son popping the question. Yikes!

Why can't we just legalize and tax this stuff? A $5 tax per gram would make the state and federal govt. a killing.

Hes gonna get probation and have to go to a drug class, and MAYBE pay a fine. What a burden to the system this whole thing will be, if they are not going to make it legal then at least let the punishment fit the crime and just issue a fine or something.

I guess the Wawa near that place is going to go out of business.

Brainstorm, I think I would have liked your dad! In my generation is was marriage THEN children. Yeah, I know, soooo old fashioned. I get this group wants to make sure everything works before committing. Back on topic, our first home was in Gwinhurst, it was a clean working class area then with affordable homes. Just to make you guys drool a bit, back then a nice 4 BR starter home cost around $40,000! It's a shame to see a nice area decline.

But 40K was a lot of money back then. I came across some of my parents check stubs from the 60's. Mortgage check was $110.09
They need to legalize hemp. It's a weed, I think folks can be responsible with a weed.

It should be legal. Kids are killing themselves on the fake stuff and then they try to outlaw that but the real stuff doesn't kill people. People wouldn't have to be so shady if they could just use it like alcohol.

I know what you mean, my parents last home, a grand home in a lovely neighborhood etc. etc. cost the grand sum of $18,500!! Heck, I paid more for my last car than we did for our first OR second house. Of course that was when making $25 to $30 thousand a year was great pay. God! I'm starting to sound like MY parents.

I know that many in the industries involved in handling the issue as we do now (myriads of medical and "treatment" professionals, law enforcement at a multitude of levels, legal profession, educational systems, prison builders and operators, probation and parole departments, etc.) will oppose fundamental change, but when I consider the zillions and zillions spent for decades and decades on the unsuccessful efforts for interdiction and criminalization and incarceration (to say nothing of the ancillary damage and costs from crimes to get $$ to pay irrationally expensive prices and the corruption that we know comes with prohibition etc.), I think that approach is demonstrably nuts. As with most situations being controlled by those with vested interests, there's a "group think" that rises up to declare that any really new approach is invalid and irresponsible. I think continuing to squander vast resources on a failed model is absurd and irresponsible.

I say let those adults who wish to sit in a stupor do so.... and I wouldn't limit that to just weed. Yeah, some will abuse it just as with alcohol but that should handled in a similar way--- though it's time for any remaining leniency for alcohol abuse that endangers others (like the all too common repeat DUI offenders who are allowed to keep their licenses) must end without regard to the substance at the root of that danger.

I'd spend some money on early education about the realistic dangers and how to make successful life choices, and maybe two rounds of rehab for those who find they screwed up and need help, but that's IT.... after that, you're on your own.

The massive funds saved could be much better spent on investing in our productive future through improved education and health care, etc.

I'm willing to bet those 11 lbs were counting the entire (probably immature) plants, the potting soil they were growing in and the pots themselves.

Since there are no REAL penalties for driving without a license most of the folks in this catagory could care less if they lose their license. They will continue to drive anyway.

I understand... that's the thought behind my comment that REAL penalties are needed when people indulge in personal choices that create danger to others. The nonsense of officially sanctioned BS which is nothing more or less than enabling the cretin to harm others through vacuous legal system non-consequences must END!

I have always known that they take the plant from the soil and bag it that way. But times have changed and I could be wrong.

Immature plants with no buds or anything on it, are still plants, so they should be counted. A tomato plant that is still a little tiny seedling just poking from the soil is still a tomato plant until it dies.

Where's that Hempman dude when you need him? Oh yeah, he's bongin' it up in his Arden bunker...looked like some prime stuff from the photos in the police press release.
