    Ulysses Gastropub

We are heading there Saturday night - our first experience on their 4th day of operations (Dec 26th) wasn't all that great. Expectations are high for this visit.

Anyone else been there yet? Rockmama? I think I saw you on their facebook page...

I went there about a month ago and ate at the bar. It was kind of pricey but the food and beer were top notch. My advice would be to get there and eat before the dinner rush.

I've been there a couple of times. In my opinion the stout float is yucky. Bummer because it sounded really good. The next time I went was to celebrate a friend's birthday. The staff took good care of our rather large party and my fish and chips were perfect. Everyone at the table was pleased with their meal. It was very crowded and loud. So if you are looking for a conversation, get seated in the back. The beer menu is extensive. I agree with cracker the prices were a little high but it is more upscale than Stanley's. I'd go again.

I went there once, Had a couple beers, a friend of mine got one of the mussel pots, i tried a few, I didn't like the flavoring she got, but the mussels were good. I want to go back, but need to save money. I am spoiled with eating where I work since I get a discount, so when I eat out other places, I am not used to paying full price lol

I posted during the change-over and that didn't make it...so,

If you have a problem paying $5-$35 for a beer this place isn't for you. Although they do have PBR and Miller Lite on tap...

Anyway, the fish 'n chips was a close second to Stoney's (THE best fish 'n chips in the USA - just ask them)... the bacon meatballs rocked as did the hummus...I had the "special" wild boar burger...which I expected to be a stiff puck...but turned out to be a juicy chunk of meat with a gooey cheese coating...the braised short rib was tender and what you would expect for $25...the beer selection rocks, they even had "Angry Orchard" hard cider...the wings are better than Stanley's, and their blue cheese is one of the BEST ever...the shredded celery and red onion was a little disappointing...full stalks and carrots would have been a better match.

A welcome addition to Brandywine Hundred dining!!!

I was there last night. The shrimp tacos were very good. Chicken Caesar was not.
I also got the Roulette Wings. They give you 9 wings. 8 are in a spicy (but not hot) wing sauce, but 1 wing.... Oh my GOD!!!!
I crave heat but this was absolutely obscene how hot it was. Couldn't touch anything else for almost 30 min. till heat subsided.

Oh and did I mention.... You don't know which one is the hot one.....

    Hence the term "Roulette".

I would definitely get the wings again, minus the loaded one.

Overall, nice place. A little more upscale than what you would expect in the Shoppes of Graylyn, but a welcome change.
Very noisy, and unfortunately no chance of seeing any outdoor seating but regardless,

Good place to take a date on a weeknight. A lot quieter. I will definitely come back.

I really need to hit this place up, and soon. It's only about 5 minutes from where I live!

    Article about the pub today

Sean McNeice wants you to meet Bertha.

    She’s smoking hot.

When her wafting, bewitching perfume – a woodsy blend of oak and cherry mingling with pork and chicken fat – catches the nose, it’s hard not to become intoxicated and fall in love.

For her, the steamy art of seduction is innate.

Bertha and McNeice, executive chef of Ulysses American Gastropub, have been a couple now for several months.

He’s getting accustomed to the envious stares from chef friends who visit Bertha at the Brandywine Hundred restaurant and covet her dark beauty.

There’s no jealousy. Bertha is committed to this fiery relationship – that is, until death, most likely by rust, do them part.

Back in March, McNeice and some friends spent about 50 hours creating and building Bertha, a sturdy, squat box smoker made from heavy steel.

“It’s something to be proud of that we did it ourselves,” he says, standing back and admiring the smoker, about 2 feet deep and 8 feet wide, at the restaurant in the Shoppes of Graylyn off Marsh Road.

He’s so pleased with his girl, McNeice says he loves it when her smoky aroma fills the restaurant.

“Sometimes I leave the door open on purpose.”

Bertha can fit eight trays of food – this afternoon it’s spiced rubbed chicken wings and baby back ribs slathered with Dijon mustard and spices – inside of her cooking chamber belly.

All will be served later during the dinner service at the popular, 120-seat restaurant that opened in late December.

Smoking – a slow, indirect cooking method and way of life in the American South and Midwest – softens tough connective tissue in ribs, melts the fat and bathes the meat in a cloud of deep smoky flavor.

    Re: Ulysses Gastropub

Finally had a chance to eat there on Saturday afternoon with a friend. The food was good to very good. I got a buffalo chicken sandwich, which could have used a little more spice but was otherwise good, and my friend got one of their specialty burgers, which she really enjoyed. We both agreed the fries were top notch. The only downside was the service was really, really slow. Which normally isn't that bad, but is kind of inexcusable when there was only a handful of people in the place. It even took about 15 minutes to get the check. The staff and bartender were extremely friendly though, which was a plus. In conclusion I would go back, and want to, I just hope the service time can be improved upon.

The wife and I finally went on Saturday night too for dinner. It was just an average place with an average visit. Nothing remarkable, good or bad. I had the pulled pork which I thought the BBQ sauce was too vinegary. She had the BLT-A which she didn't really like. Their Iced Tea is not a fresh brew as much as it is a powder mix that both McDonalds and Wawa uses. Blah. Their French Onion Soup was really good. Fries - average. Their fresh baked pretzels were just warm dough.

Overall, not impressed. I will go back to give them another chance but all in all just another average eatery with nothing but beer to make them stand out. If they are going to make it, the food needs to improve
