N.J. driver, 32, indicted for running down geese

By PEGGY WRIGHT, The (Morristown, N.J.) Daily Record
    Updated Thursday, May 31, 2007

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — A Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority worker, who admitted to police he did a "stupid thing" when he ran down three Canada geese last year, has been indicted on animal cruelty charges.

The three cruelty charges -- one for each goose that was killed -- are third-degree crimes that carry punishment of up to five years each in prison upon conviction. Minchin's request in February to be admitted into Morris County's Pre-Trial Intervention program for first-time offenders was denied. Had he been enrolled in the program, the charges would have been dismissed if he successfully served a period of probation.

VINELAND, N.J. — A 12-year-old Walnut Manor boy was arrested for beating a cat with a concrete reinforced metal fence pipe, officials said Wednesday.

The youngster and several other youths were playing a game reportedly called “Beat the Cat,” according to investigators.

Is there a rising trend in animal cruelty or just the numbers are rising in reports of this type of abuse? How do you feel about animals? Should we increase the penalty for animal cruelty?

I think we should increase the penalty because it sick to beat up on defenseless animals

    Re: Animal Cruelty

Like i said on TNJ, it must have been "Abuse a Animal" day in NJ...........

both people are sick, especially the little kid who beat the cat to death, thats a sign of a real problem he should be heavily evaluated and watched throughout life.....

Running over geese.....that could just be a stupid act, but to beat a cat to death with a pipe, little more concerning to me...

I would rather these folks take their anger/aggression/sickness out on animals then humans.

I think that there is no more an increase as much as it is just getting reported more now. If you have not noticed, the past 2 weeks have been "slow" news weeks.

I definitely think those kids need some serious help now. It's a proven fact that animal abuse is frequently a first step towards criminality. Many serial killers started out hurting/killing animals. All serial killers that are known to the FBI today, have histories of animal cruelty. Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer started with animals. All of the teenage school shooters in the last several years have a history of animal cruelty. Had these instances been reported, investigated, charged and prosecuted - hundreds of people would not have been ruthlessly killed. I hope the authorities don't take it lightly what these kids did. Hopefully some early intervention will straighten these kids out.

I've also got some concerns about the grown man running down geese. I hope he doesn't have kids and/or a wife. I'd be willing to bet either he's abusing/hurting them or at the very least not setting a very good example for the kids.

I say it every day: people are crazy!

You're absolutely 100% right about hurting innocent creatures leading to hurting humans... I wonder if a person with this type of mindset can be helped or rehabilitated at all. I wonder if maybe the problem lies in brain chemistry set at birth.

I agree with RS I used to work for a shrink and it is a well know fact that a kid that abuses animals turns to a life of crime and into a serial killer when a adult. Get help for these kids before it is to late.

    Re: Animal Cruelty

I read both of these today and especially reading about the cat beating, I had a sick feeling in my stomach. I actually wanted to sit and cry. It is indeed getting worse as are our youth. I'm scared to death to see what the next 10 years will bring. Will I even be able to walk out of the house as a senior citizen?
I feel VERY strongly that the laws for animal abuse need to be much tougher. There is so much that needs to be done.

GL, do you really believe that because a kid abuses an animal that they will leave humans alone. Not a chance! The animal is just a starter kit.

Look at the idiot NFL guys with their attitute about dog fighting. It makes me furious.

I don't do it now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,much. Just kidding. The BB gun is for snakes. The wife freaks when she comes across one. Have traps for ground hogs and squirrels. Oh, and a pistol grip Mosberg for uninvited (home invasion) human snakes. It's unlocked and loaded next to the bed. Flick the safety off and you're ready to inflict harm.

Snakes are ok. Get rid of them. Remind me never to come to your house without a invite. I don't want to be pistol whipped for showing up unannounced. I hope you catch and release the groundhogs and squirrels to another location.

Please come and get the damn groundhog(s) from under my back deck! Just this week one came running towards me and scared the crap out of me. My dogs just watched and didn't run after it until the damn thing was already back in it's hole!
