December 2-5 Summit Bridge over Chesapeake & Delaware Canal to close for repairs
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District will close the Summit Bridge, carrying Delaware Route 896 and U.S. Route 301 over the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, at 10 p.m. Dec. 2 until 5 a.m. Dec. 5.
The bridge is currently undergoing repairs that will strengthen and stabilize the bridge. During the weekend closure, a gusset plate (a thick plate of steel that connects bridge beams and girders or columns to trusses) will be replaced. Following the closure there will continue to be periodic lane closures to prepare the bridge for painting.
Please follow the posted detour to travel around the closure. The detour is as follows:
Northbound U.S. Route 301 traffic will be detoured to Boyds Corner Road (DE Route 896), to U.S. Route 13 north, to DE Route 1 north, to DE Route 72 north, to U.S. Route 40 west, back to U.S. Route 301 / DE Route 896.
Southbound U.S. Route 301 / DE Route 896 traffic will be detoured to U.S. Route 40 east, to DE Route 72 south, to DE Route 1 south, to U.S. Route 13 south via Exit 148, to Boyds Corner Road (DE Route 896), back to U.S. Route 301.
Work began on the Summit Bridge in April and is expected to be completed in December 2012. The $10 million project was awarded to Marinis Brother, Inc., New Castle, Del., and includes replacing gusset plates, stiffening gusset plates, miscellaneous steel repairs, and sandblasting and repainting the bridge.
