Middletown woman asleep at wheel now faces drug charges

SMYRNA, Del. — A Middletown woman was arrested on drug charges Nov. 3 after being found asleep at the wheel of her vehicle while at a Smyrna convenience store.

At about 1:37 a.m., Smyrna Police responded to the Royal Farms gas pump area on Route 13 and Glenwood Avenue after a report of a woman asleep in the driver's side of a vehicle.

Smyrna Police Lt. Norman Wood said when the officer asked the woman for identification, the woman said she had to look under the passenger's seat to locate it. The woman got out of the vehicle, and the officer saw her concealing a glass pipe, used to smoke marijuana, in her fist. After handing over the pipe to the officer, the woman quickly stuffed an object down the back of her pants, Lt. Wood said.

The officer placed her under arrest for possessing the pipe and advised her that she would be searched at the police department. The woman then retrieved a small plastic bag containing amphetamines and methadone pills. A later search also revealed that the woman had suspected marijuana in her possession, Lt. Wood said.

Samantha A. Monroe, 29, of the 500 block of Maple Avenue, Middletown, was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, tampering with physical evidence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, Lt. Wood said.

She was processed at the Smyrna Police Department, presented at Justice of the Peace Court 7 by videophone, and released on a $1,500 unsecured bond to await another court appearance.
