A Wilmington man was arrested for beating a puppy.

Police were dispatched to East 24th street because of reports a man was beating a nine month old puppy with a stick.

Witness say they say the subject, Dwight Phares strike the animal with the 3-foot stick 15 to 20 times.

When officers arrived they arrested Phares, who still had the stick in his possession.

The puppy was able to escape and fled to his hone in the 2500 block of West Street.
