Move Halloween Trick-Or-Treating To Saturday, Lawmaker Suggests

Move Halloween Trick-Or-Treating To Saturday, Lawmaker Suggests

Halloween is a fun night, but it can also be rushed when you have to race home from work, get the kids dressed and out the door.
And even for those who just enjoy giving out candy, sometimes the kids are knocking on your door before you're home yet.
So, because of this, a Connecticut lawmaker is proposing that Halloween be moved to the last Saturday in October, rather than always being on Oct. 31.
He says the Saturday observance would allow for more activities during the day, especially since kids don't get off school on Halloween, so they too are usually rushing home from school. read more
    ------------------------

I can see where moving it to the weekend makes some sense. I know we run around here like crazy at my house getting the two kids ready to go out and at the same time answering the door to the little hooligans that started early.

But then there is the tradition. It's gotta be on the 31st.

Growing up in NE PA, we RARELY went trick or treating on Halloween. Our little towns would usually pick a night over the weekend. Quite often, the neighboring towns would have different nights, so we would head there, too.

I had no idea that was not the norm until I moved here. I remember asking people, "When is trick or treat night?" and they always looked at me like I was an idiot.

I like the different night for trick or treating for several reasons, not the least of which is the after work/school mad dash to get out. Also, some of us liked to host/attend Halloween parties, so this way, we got to do both without sacrificing either.

I'm ALL for this. Halloween should be the last Saturday in October. In fact.... I've been saying this for years.

Like Terri said....it works great and is tons of fun in these small PA towns (like Easton). Everyone is home, prepared and everyone has a great time. Parents can relax and enjoy the night (see below). You have time for real fun and to soak it all in.

This Monday is going to suck.... it's always the same....

~Pizza delivery guys speeding through the neighborhoods because no one has time to cook
~Kids riding that sugar high right into school on Tuesday...
~Assuming you can get them to sleep Monday night.
~Parents rushing home from work to toss together lame outfits and zombie make-up
~Still having to deal with the usual school night crap (homework, papers, lunches, etc)
~Parents all stressed out and not being able to relax and enjoy the fun-ness that is so freaking EPIC with Halloween!
~People with little kids, the elderly and everyone who has to get up early the next morning, close up shop way too early on week nights which leads to the tricking.
    ~Dark streets lead to dangers.
~Less creative costumes due to the lack of preparation time.
~Being that loser parent who forces the kids inside to get ready for bed, while other kids are still roaming the hood....booo!

Seriously.... the Loop is always the Saturday before and everyone adjusted fine to it. Why not give the same respect to parents and kids? Why should all the college, 20 somethings get all the fun? How can you NOT agree to this??

Halloween is not like a birthday or other event that is date specific, it was traditionally the eve before All Souls Day which is actually Nov 2. So duh...does anyone even celebrate All Souls Day?

I'm starting a petition!!! GL.... you should make a POLL!

The problem is, it's dark before most people can get home and get ready. By the time you get home and get changed, kids are already at the door.

Last Saturday makes all the sense in the world.

Bars are not going to like that. Loss of money. Halloween during the week is like St Patty's during the week, it is an extra day of money.

Also, how many adults are going to miss out on a weekend halloween party?

What about parents that are not together fighting about who is going to take the kids out on a Saturday while the other wants to go out and party?

Having it on a Saturday is not going to keep streets safer or pizza drivers from speeding through neighborhoods either.

It probably should be up to the individual towns. Maybe even the individual communities within the towns.

But I voted it should not be moved because I'm a traditionalist

Problem with doing this is going to be some kids trick or treating twice because their community does it on Saturday and a few days later the next community over has it on Halloween.

I can probably assume that's not going to be a problem for the kids themselves But depending on their age, it will really be up to their parents to allow them to do that.

Why is this a problem? Where I grew up, we often had the opportunity to Trick or Treat in the neighboring towns. Everyone knew and expected it.

Listened to WMMR this morning huh?

I don't have any kids, but I do like this idea. For all the people who say but the 31st is Halloween, how about you call the last Saturday of the month Trick or Treat day, but you still ahve Halloween on the 31st. Would that make you happy? Although I am sure people would still try and Trick or Treat on the 31st, but when they gets no candy, that be there own fault!

no. have not listened to them for a few days. Did they talk about this?

Like I said before in my original post, you have benefits for both arguments and I agree with nearly all of them. To me, if changes are made, by the time that it does happen my kids will be out of the trick or treating phase so really it won't matter to me.

As an adult (and even growing up) halloween didn't really matter much to me. IMO it is silly and stupid and if it went away I wouldn't care. I hate dress up.
