Delaware State Police arrested a Rehoboth Beach man following the attempted robbery of a Milton woman early morning Oct. 24 in the Walmart parking lot.
The 19-year-old woman was sitting in her car at 1:05 a.m. when the man approached her and wrote her a note asking her for money because he needed gas for his truck, said Cpl. Jeffrey Hale of the Delaware State Police. The man has a disability that requires him to write in order to communicate, police said.
The woman gave him $10, and then the man wrote a note asking for more money, Hale said.
When the woman said no, Hale said, the man wrote her another note telling her he would hurt her if she didn't comply.
Hale said the woman rolled up her window and called 911. The man then drove away in his red truck; police stopped him on Fisher Road near Route 9 in Milton.
Police arrested Robert Ovens, 42, and charged him with second-degree attempted robbery. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $5,000 secured bail
