Power out? Blame it on a squirrel
Rehoboth Beach — A nearly two-hour power outage along the Route 1 corridor between Rehoboth Beach and Lewes Aug. 8 was caused by a squirrel.
According to Delmarva Power spokesman Matt Likovich, a squirrel scurried its way into a substation and tripped the breaker for two circuits.
"It's not common, but it happens," he said. "Squirrels, snakes get curious, and boom! It's not always our fault. When it does happen, it creates an inconvenience for customers."
About 3,800 customers lost power at 7:38 p.m., including the Midway Shopping Center and outlets and residents in Lewes and Rehoboth. Downtown Rehoboth Beach was not affected, but some streets in the residential area of the city were, Likovich said.
Tina Shockley, spokesperson for the Delaware Department of Transportation, said three traffic lights were briefly out, but they were put on generators until power was restored around 9:40 p.m.
Cpl. Bruce Harris of the Delaware State Police said no accidents were reported while the traffic lights were out.
