NRA Takes Aim at Delaware Gun Show Bill

DOVER, Del. (AP)- The National Rifle Association is urging supporters to contact lawmakers in Delaware in an effort to defeat legislation that the group claims will ban private sales at gun shows in Delaware.

The NRA contends that the true intent of the bill, which was to be discussed in a Senate committee on Wednesday, is to move toward a total ban on all private guns sales, even those between family members and friends.

The NRA also says the measure to close the so-called gun show loophole for gun sales will do nothing to reduce crime because criminals will continue to obtain their guns illegally.

The bill is part of a series of gun control measures proposed by Gov. Jack Markell, whose office says the NRA criticism is off target.

Re: NRA Takes Aim at Delaware Gun Show Bill

I fully support the 2nd Amendment and I am 100% for the ability of American citizens to arm themselves.

I really want to side with the NRA on this one. I really do. And I will. If somebody can sell me on this one particular point:

Instant background checks that prevent felons and mentally unstable people from buying firearms on the open market are unnecessary. They never prevent people who should not have a firearm from having them.

    -------

Basically, I'm asking someone to sell me on the point that all background checks are unnecessary. Because, if it makes ANY sense at all to have licensed dealers perform background checks, then it makes SOME sense to have unlicensed sellers do the same if they're at a gun show that attracts people who want guns, for whatever reason.

ETA: Here's the longer story. Basically, if you're at a gun show, selling firearms as an unlicensed private seller, you will have to get one of the licensed dealers at the show to run a check for you when selling a gun. I don't know how that will work. I suppose any costs associated with the background check will be added to the sale price of the firearm.
