Delaware business: State aid to help Johnson Controls expand in Middletown
State economic development officials will announce plans today to grant $2.4 million to Johnson Controls Inc. to support a planned expansion in Middletown, where the Wisconsin-based company operates a battery production facility.
Johnson is planning to build a second manufacturing and distribution facility just off U.S. 301 and Levels Road, on the southwest edge of town in a planned business park in what is known as Westown.
According to town officials, Johnson will invest $70 million in the new facility and add 150 to 200 new jobs at the site, where the council already has voted to suspend property taxes for 10 years. Company officials said they could not comment on their plans this week.
Johnson's North Broad Street location in Middletown employs 250 workers represented by the United Auto Workers union, Local 1516. Union officials expect the new location will also employ union labor.
