Re: Rascal's (New Castle) on Restaurant: Impossible!

OMG! What a horrible showing of this restaurant. No one has commented about the very end of the show. During programming, it stated that when the Food Channel talked to the owner after the intervention, he said things were going great, but when the Food Channel made a surprise visit, the restaurant was closed and the dining room looked a mess. Also, during programming, it stated there was a sign on the door, however, I don't know what the sign said because Comcast managed to put something across the writing during programming here in Denver. Does anyone know what has happened to Rascals? Are they closed? Did the owner go back to being a slob and not take care of his property? What a waste of $10,000 by the Food Channel if this guy reverted to his old ways! Maybe he should go one of those hoarding shows?

The last thing I heard was that the restaurant is only open on the weekends as reported by the local paper. I have not gone past there to see if that was true or not.

I hope he can sell the place and let someone else run it.

Re: Rascal's (New Castle) on Restaurant: Impossible!

I saw the text at the end of the show. It did say something about Rascal's doing well at first, but later being closed, and it getting "hoarded" again on the back patio IIRC. From what I read on the internet, the owner's father isn't doing well, so the owner has been closed a lot while taking care of his Dad. I don't think 2 days and $10000 made the owner change his ways, and I have a feeling that he's hoarding again, and not cleaning up. What did he say on the show? He's been "renovating" for 9 years?? 2 days vs 9 years isn't enough time to have someone change their old habits.

I have no idea what's going on. But I've driven past Rascal's a few times, and I've eaten across the street from it a few times (Golden Dove), and Rascal's always looks like it's closed. It looks decent from the front, even with a flashing red LED sign, but there's never any cars parked in the lot.

Perhaps I'll stop by someday just to see if there's a note on the door or something....

I saw the show a few weeks ago...completely shocking although I have never been there. I did read an article last week about Delawareans being on reality shows and the father of the owner was quoted in it stating that he had wished his son never opened their restaurant to the show for obvious public display and now embarrassment. I'll find the article.

    Hello all in New Castle,
I am from California, not that it matters much. What matters is the light that this show shed upon you. I was appalled to watch this Impossible episode. I missed the first part but when I saw the dead mice I was totally disgusted. Mostly for the fact that your city code enfocement and the health department had not shut this place down long before the show. And then to top it off the City Hall was brought free food as a bribe, I meant Advertising. Please Robert of Restaurant Impossible, how could you not walk away from this place immediatley. Shame on Robert, Food Network and New Castle City Hall.

I watched this place for a long time before finally deciding to take the step and go in. Some of the place was nice, big fish tank, cool fish, smelled good enough from seafood. We ordered way over priced shrimp and crab cakes. While waiting, I started to really look around. If you don't mind the electrical wires hanging from the dropped ceiling (with no panels in the squares) and the owners toddlers running around the seating area and the black fingerprinted area at the entrance to the kitchen. The back of the 'room' had canvas hanging from the ceiling instead of a wall. The food was good enough but I was not about to use the ladies room! Won't go back until I hear some really good reviews by folks I trust. Still looks closed to me too.

On one hand I don't want to beat up on the guy to the point that we force him out of business.

On the other hand I don't think he should be in business.

    I am torn.

i think they should have just been shut down. Robert was right, he does not deserve to be in the restaurant business AT ALL!!! and I'm deeply ashamed of Delaware's health standards. i absolutely can not believe that he wasn't shut down.

I wish Chef Ramsey had done the show. I can see him running from the kitchen to the empty dining room shouting "Stop Eating! I am closing the restaurant!"

Because of this, I have stopped there on Friday to take a look. The door had a sign saying "Opening soon, now hiring". As I was looking in, a guy came to the door. He said he was one of the new managers. He let me in, and gave me a mini tour. The place looks amazing! It was absolutely spotless. He even took me thru the new kitchen, and out to the patio. I was very surprised. Clean as can be. I thanked him, and told him of the bad rap they are getting from people that haven't ever been here. All I can say is....I am going to try lunch when they open in April. I will let everyone know how it went.

I have been there and know that they earned the reputation they now have.
At any rate, I hope you enjoy your meal there
