Jay Leno picks Delaware’s “booger” ice cream
Rehoboth Beach’s booger ice cream is getting national exposure Friday night.
On “The Tonight Show” airing at 11:35 p.m., host Jay Leno and his guest Hoda Kotb will dip spoons into the ice cream that’s served at Chip Hearn’s The Ice Cream Store on Rehoboth Avenue.
Booger’s gross-out name and knockout taste – it’s actually a green-colored cake batter ice cream swirled with green-hued caramel and Lucky Charms marshmallow bits – was a huge hit this past summer. Here’s the story behind the name.
Hearn, who is vacationing in Florida, said that “The Tonight” show called and asked him to send some of the ice cream to the Burbank studio. He shipped it today along with the stand’s other popular flavor – Better Than Sex.
Hearn dreams up the ice cream flavors, which are then created for him in 10-gallon batches by Jim Mitchell, owner of Woodside Farm Creamery in Hockessin.
Kotb, who appears on “The Today Show” with Kathie Lee Gifford, is well acquainted with The Ice Cream Store. Her mother owns a home in Rehoboth and she held a book signing this past summer at Browseabout Books.
Hearn’s stand near the boardwalk is closed for the season. It reopens in late February.
