DSU to equalize spending on male/female sports
WILMINGTON -- Delaware State University has settled a class-action lawsuit which charged it was in violation of a federal law requiring gender equity in varsity sports.
It will now have to increase spending on female athletics or reduce spending on male sports.
The lawsuit, which had been filed by members of DSU’s female equestrian team after the school announced it would be cutting their program for financial reasons, had been set to go to trial in U.S. District Court on Monday. But the two sides reached a settlement, details of which were not released until late Thursday.
“DSU commits to achieving gender equity within a few years that is consistent with its enrollment proportions by increasing the opportunities for female athletes,” said Derek Carter, DSU athletics director, in a written statement this afternoon. read full article
