    Move Over

The below national PSA urging motorists to "slow down and move over" premiered yesterday at the Delaware City (DE) Fire Company. It's a joint venture between the Delaware City Fire Company and the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association to educate the public about dangers associated with passing responders working on the roadways. The project was launched at the request of the Delaware City Fire Company following the Line of Duty Death of FF/EMT Michelle Smith, who was struck while operating at a crash in December of 2008. The CVVFA produced the PSA with the USFA and with funding from DOJ.

At least something good is coming out of such a tragedy. I always slow down and assess the situation before attempting to pass.

I'm with you Max, I thought his went into effect awhile ago. I think it's great. It really pisses me off when people don't get over for emergency crews. Moving over just makes it safer for everyone.

It has been on the books for a while in Delaware, the new media campaign goes with tougher penalties that just went into effect.

I always treat emergency responders and emergency personell as if they were going to my home or treating my family.

I like the video. Having spent 20 years in the emergency services fields, there's one more suggestion I'd like to make:

If you suddenly become aware of an emergency vehicle behind you, don't panic! You would be amazed at the things you see behind the wheel of an emergency vehicle. I can't tell you how many people panic, stomp their brakes and almost lose control of their vehicle before finally changing lanes. We actually refer to it as "the siren swerve".

I'll admit...when I see an ambulance with their lights on behind me, I go "oh shit". I think it's natural and people are just trying to do the right thing. Wish there was a way to avoid it.

America is an idea, but it's an idea that brings with it some baggage, like power brings responsibility. It's an idea that brings with it equality, but equality even though it's the highest calling, is the hardest to reach. The idea that anything is possible, that's one of the reasons why I'm a fan of America. - Bono, Commencement University of Pennsylvania May 17, 2004

This is something we need to teach when our teens are learning to drive and by example. Some people never learned to do it. The example that sticks out in my mind is watching people pull all the way over not just for emergency vehicles but funeral processions too when were in Tennessee. It's respect for the dead and grieving, the ill or emergency personnel and doing the very thing you would want done for you or your loved ones.

That is exactly the point I make to my kids. You never know when it will be you or someone you love that they are going to help.
