Biking routes / trails in northern NCC ?

After an 8 year hiatus from riding my bike, circumstances once again allow me to engage in this activity. So, I took it down to Henry's Bike Shop (great place, they took care of me) and it is now 'up to factory spec'. *I* on the other hand am NOT up to factory specs yet. I have no notion of safe riding routes in northern NCC. I am looking for 10 to 30 mile runs that will not be putting my life in jeopardy ... any ideas?
