EXACTLY. LTE will be unleashed in select test markets within the next 6 months. The one thing that could change this is Verizon's move to switch its network to a newer, faster standard called LTE (Long Term Evolution). Since many GSM carriers plan to make the same upgrade, Apple wouldn't have to ship two iPhones with different innards.
This used to be the verizon way, for sure, dilute and contaminate every phone with all kinds of vzw crap and apps, etc. They have taken a surprisingly hand off approach to many of the new droids and it seems this is now their normal MO when bringing a new OS into the mix.Even then, Apple could elect to continue its partnership with AT&T -- perhaps because of Verizon's wish to have more control over the phone's configuration than Apple would allow. But with Verizon on the same standard, at least hackers would theoretically be able to unlock iPhones and use them on that carrier's network.
IMO and many others both apple and vzw would be foolish to not bring the iPhone to verizon. They are missing out on a HUGE amount of people that would dive in. Even if apple cut ties completely with att, they would be better off. I mean that is the easiest diss for someone poking at the iphone, the crap network. even reporter tell jobs to his face (this is funny)

I'm willing to wait for Verizon (or T-Mobile).
