    The one thing that could change this is Verizon's move to switch its network to a newer, faster standard called LTE (Long Term Evolution). Since many GSM carriers plan to make the same upgrade, Apple wouldn't have to ship two iPhones with different innards.
    EXACTLY. LTE will be unleashed in select test markets within the next 6 months.

    Even then, Apple could elect to continue its partnership with AT&T -- perhaps because of Verizon's wish to have more control over the phone's configuration than Apple would allow. But with Verizon on the same standard, at least hackers would theoretically be able to unlock iPhones and use them on that carrier's network.
    This used to be the verizon way, for sure, dilute and contaminate every phone with all kinds of vzw crap and apps, etc. They have taken a surprisingly hand off approach to many of the new droids and it seems this is now their normal MO when bringing a new OS into the mix.

    IMO and many others both apple and vzw would be foolish to not bring the iPhone to verizon. They are missing out on a HUGE amount of people that would dive in. Even if apple cut ties completely with att, they would be better off. I mean that is the easiest diss for someone poking at the iphone, the crap network. even reporter tell jobs to his face (this is funny)

    6/3/10: Verizon Leads Launch for 4G LTE wireless broadband, which supports two-way video conferencing
    (available now via AT&T, iPhone 4 to iPhone 4).

    "The stars are beginning to align for an iPhone that rides on Verizon's upcoming 4G LTE next-gen wireless broadband to appear next year ...
    Verizon is welcoming 4G video. AT&T is defending itself against it."

    6/7/2010: Apple Keynote at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) iPhone 4 unveiled.

    I watched the Keynote (1 hour:52 minutes:46 seconds). iPhone 4 is cutting-edge technology. Check out the accelerated gyroscope for gaming, the front & rear cameras for video conferencing (HD video recording & editing), BIG battery, 2 antennas (outer stainless steel bands), state-of-the-art graphics (4x pixels of iPhone 3GS) and new camera technology, ... etc. Exterior glass is same as that used for helicopter windshields.

    By the way, the iPhone 4 demo proceeded without a hitch once all #570 Wi-Fi base stations, in the room, were shut down. I sure hope Steve got the message -- > move to Verizon. I really want this phone; I'm willing to wait for Verizon (or T-Mobile).

    6/11/10: iPhone 4 coming to T-Mobile UK
    T-Mobile USA to follow?

    "Both #1 Verizon and #3 Sprint Nextell have CDMA-based networks, and the iPhone is a GSM/UMTS handset.
    #2 AT&T runs its 3G UMTS service in the 850MHz and 1900MHz bands;
    #4 T-Mobile USA's is at 1700MHz and 2100MHz. Both the iPhone 3GS and the new iPhone 4 support both 850MHz and 2100MHz UMTS.

    Score one for T-Mobile USA in that Apple wouldn't have to make any modifications to the iPhone to enable it to run on #4's service, as it would for #1 and #3.

    The Reg [Register] tires of the endless stream of "Verizon to offer the iPhone" rumors — so much so that we didn't even bother to report this week's version. In our considered opinion, the iPhone won't move to Verizon until LTE 4G broadband becomes widely available. If then. ®"

    What a decision! Glad I'm stuck so I don't have to make it now. I'll wait to hear how everybody likes the 2 before I decide.
