For years I didn't buy a Weber because of the cost. I kept buying the cheaper ones with all the pretty bells and whistles that came with them. I kept them covered and I'd be lucky to get three good years out of them, plus the cooking area had hot and cooler spots, they weren't consistent. Finally I broke down and paid the big bucks for the Weber. I could kick myself in the ass for waiting so long.

There is a safety feature built into the connection between the regulator and the cylinder that is designed to severely restrict the flow of propane if the rubber hose is cut or melts. It is called an "excess flow valve"...imagine that!
When you go to light the grill, the first obvious thing you need to make sure of is that the cylinder has fuel in it. Then make sure all controls are turned off on the grill. Open the cylinder valve very slowly and only just crack it open slightly. Wait several seconds. This will allow time for the fuel pressure to "charge" the propane line. Then open the cylinder valve all the way, and light the grill normally.
That excess flow valve is very sensitive! If you open the cylinder valve too quickly and try and light the grill, you will get a very low flame. If this happens, shut the grill off, remove the regulator connection from the cylinder, make sure all of the controls are turned off, and start over!
It is a pretty common problem...
The other thing that you may have, but I doubt because you actually have a flame at the burner, is a spiders nest in the venturi tubes of the burner. If you remove the burner from the grill and stick a wire down each of the tubes that run from the controls to the burner itself, you might find a web in there...You see, the propane goes through those tubes at very low pressure, so it doesn't take much to restrict their flow. When you put the burner back in, make sure the orifices are pointing directly into the venturi tubes! Good Luck!
