New Dover facility will serve families of war dead

DOVER — The military mortuary at Dover Air Force Base is opening a new facility to serve families traveling to Dover to witness the return of war casualties.

Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz will preside over the dedication of the new Center for Families of the Fallen on Wednesday.

The center will be staffed by counselors and support specialists who will assist families awaiting the return of their loved ones. It also will be a point of contact for families requesting follow-up counseling or other help as they cope with their loss.

Officials say the new center will be more convenient for both families and mortuary officials than the space now shared by the mortuary unit with the base's active duty and reserve wings.
