    Need a good auto mechanic!

Do you guys have a trusted auto mechanic that you turn to when you need scheduled maintenance, tires, or when the dreaded engine light goes on? Frankly, I feel like I’m getting ripped off at the dealership and I’m looking for a new place to service my car. Not opposed to dealerships or chains as long as the price is right and the service is good.

I need an oil change, but my car’s maintenance required light also came on last week, and I’m pretty sure my brakes are squeaky and I need to replace at least 2, if not 3 tires. It’s going to be a big service – no idea what it will/should cost.

I don’t mind paying for good service, but I don’t want to be nickel and dimed, and I don’t want to pay for anything I don’t need. If I only need 1 new tire, I don’t want someone talking me into getting 3.

I live in the Newark area and would really LOVE to drop my car off early Saturday morning – 8 or 8:30ish and pick it up whenever it’s done. I have a Honda Accord, if that makes any difference.

    Any suggestions!

For tires and brakes i suggest tire sales and service in newport in the industrial park right before the movies there.

    tire sales and service
    600 1st State Boulevard, Wilmington - (302) 994-2900

for a oil change, i like jiffy lube if you want to have someone do it. they are fast, cheap, and they vacuum your car and wash your windows.

just have to add here, buy Jerm some tools for christmas and make him get his hands dirty, it will save you a boatload.

    Jess-

    Ray's Certified Auto Repair
    2042 Telegraph Road, Wilmington, DE‎ - (302) 892-3375‎

He's by the Kirkwood Highway entrance to Delaware Park, down near the ugly Kirkwood Library.

I don't know if Ray and his son keep weekend hours.

You will never get ripped off there.

ETA: If you need same day service, however, I don't think Ray can do that because he's not going to have your Honda parts stocked and ready.

They were fantastic. No charge for the diagnostic, which was awesome. Told me I didn't need tired or brakes even though I clearly had no clue what I was talking about and told them I did - they could have taken advantage of me here and didn't. Charged a pittance to replace my battery and change my oil, put some air in my tires.

    Highly recommended!

why cause they exploded a car engine?

i see reports about juiffy lubes and what not being horrible places to take cars on the news and stuff, believe you me i am crazy when it comes to car maintenance and i have taken a car there a few times. you can watch them thru the window (at least the one on kirkwook you can) and they have never done me wrong.

i do almost everything on the cars myself in my driveway, i actually have to remove and drain the brake booster on my car today, gonna be a huge PITA, but ill git-r-dun....for free.99 instead of the $300 a shop would charge. im probably selling my car when that is done...so anyway looking for a sweet ride keep your eyes peeled :P

We took our Crown Victory to Carmen at the 13/40 split. for an oil change and they put the wrong oil in our car and they had to replace the whole engine. When we came back from a trip down south the car was making a funny noise. they had just changed the oil and filter before we had left to go on or trip. The service rep told us that we should have had them change the oil before we had gone so I showed him the receipt. That was before they replaced the engine. So much for having a dealership do it.

Hey I use to until I bought my Chevy HHR last year. Ford did not have a Employee Discount Program to the general public, like Chevy did at that time. I haven't owned a Chevy since 1999.

Owned plenty of Ford Mustang 5.0 LX in my younger years.

Don't let Carmen do any transmission work for you. It'll never run again.

I'm tired, and I can't really think straight...

so I hope this post comes out right.....

    OKAY....
I'm not a fan of Carman either... (Sorry Na)
Not for their service, but their actions after my car was broken into and then dented from the front to rear.
I owned a 1989 Ford Probe, which at the time had a bad synchronizer and would not stay in third gear. I took it to Carman, and had them repair the transmission, and got a call three days later that the car was done! Well I was happy that they gave me a loaner car to drive while my vehicle was down, and the repairs were done promptly. I went to pick up the car, and drove it home and went to install my stereo system in the vehicle. Now, mind you, I had close to 5 grand worth of stereo equipment in the car at the time. and I proceeded to drive over to Atlantic city that evening, I got to the bottom of the bridge, and I had no transmission... Nothing. I could not get it into ANY gear, and pulled off of the side of the road, and called my dad to flat tow me back home. I called Carman and told them that my vehicle that was just repaired had a total transmission failure, and I flat towed it back to my place of residence, and I would need for them to come and pick it up and tow it on Saturday morning to repair it again. They agreed, and I followed the car down to Carman's lot the next morning, and I talked to the service writer, which told me that I should just get rid of the car, because it's got over 100K on the odometer, and it's on it's last legs. and not worth the full repair on the transmission. Well I was a little peeved at the comment, and suggestion that I should just pull the money out of my pocket, and buy myself a new vehicle from the lot up front instead of getting my vehicle repaired again, but I dismissed it, and told him that I had re-installed the stereo equipment back into my car, and I was not going to pull it back out again, and asked if they would please keep the car inside overnight to fix the problem. The service writer agreed, and wrote down on the service ticket in bold uppercase letters, CAR MUST BE KEPT INSIDE OVERNIGHT!!! and underlined it. Well this is where I have a legitimate gripe.... The next morning, 10 minutes before I was on my way out the door to go to work, I received a phone call that I needed to come down to the dealership, and that my car was broken into last night. well I proceeded to go down to the shop, and saw that the car was not only broken into, they broke an EXPENSIVE rear quarter window, to unlock my door, and then yank all of the wiring and tweeters from my a pillars, my remote controls for the stereo, in which I had the faceplate to, and then take what looked like a ball peen hammer to every body panel on the car, including the rear deck lid, hood, fenders and rear quarters. I went in with the understanding that they wee going to be responsible for the repairs to my vehicle because they were done on their property, and the same service writer, and now the manager standing behind him said " We are not responsible for any vehicles left overnight on our property, it says so right on the signage that we have posted on the wall of our dealership.
Until it was brought to Mr Carman's attention that I threatened to sue, and had proof that I had in writing, proof that they acknowledged that my car was supposed to be parked inside, if not completed by days end.
Now after the repairs were done, they did a hell of a repair job on the vehicle, fixing the paint, and dents, and after the second time repairing the transmission for the second time, it ran great!!! But between the one service manager not wanting to take responsibility for their mistake, and the service writer telling me to, instead of getting the vehicle repaired, go look for a new vehicle on the lot, I told them to repair the car, and my lawyer would be in touch, not wanting to pull out my trump card, and talk to Mr Carman personally, and get them into more trouble than they could have possibly been in, for telling me the things they did, I wanted to keep Mr Carman out of it.

NOW... that being said.. I HAVE sent people down to Naomi from my place of business several times. Why? Because I KNOW that if they deal with a compitent person, they will be taken care of! I've also called Naomi, KNOWING that the part they showed in the book (yes I know how to use a book to look up parts) was one that is ALWAYS out of stock, and where could she suggest me get one, and she didn't think twice to tell me another place, and not only tell me who to talk to, but what the phone number was before I hung up!

    BUT... I'm calling BULLSHIT here......

PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING TWO POSTS BY YOU.....

This is the SECOND time you've posted this IN THE SAME THREAD.

Mr SilverEagle... Make up your mind.... Was it transmission work they did on your vehicle, or was it engine work? Because the last time I crawled underneath EVERY vehicle I've owned, and SEVERAL of my dear friends (I'm a gearhead at heart) The transmission and the engine, although it LOOKS like it's all one piece, they are IN FACT TWO DIFFERENT PARTS, bolted together... I can run an engine w/o a transmission, as you can also run a transmission w/o a fuel powered engine driving it.

Zip...You run the transmission without an engine??? I understand your point about the service writer. I don't go to GM dealer in Lewes for that reason.. They don't like high milage cars.

I don't know much about the probe buy our 96 Crown Vic had 250+ K miles on it when we got rid of it, no problems at all (I know I mentioned this earlier).

We ave the car to a couple we knew, the woman helped with my mother in laws care, the husband was some kind of supervisor with With Waste Management and when I came out of the hospital the guys would always come into the back yard to get my can or cans and put them back until I could, and if I forgot, which older folks do sometimes they would come in and get it. Well they were moving to Kansas so she could take are of her father and there was some worry if their car would make it. Christmas card this year, still thanking us and yes the car is still on the road doing just fine. She didn't mention the milage though. If you take car of an auto with proper maintenance there is no reason for it to die at 100K. There are exceptions of course, I realize that.

Ads Zip said transmission failures and engine failures are not one in the same. Changing the engine oil wil not effect the transmission, there was something else wrong.

    Is it March 20th yet?

I made the mistake of buying a 1994 Merc from Carmen new. The transmission problem was on the Merc. The motor problem was on an 1991 Crown Victory that we had at the same time. And after I put 70,000 miles on my 1995 Ford Bronco that I bought at Bayshore and they sent me to Carmen for transmission work. Since then I only buy Chrysler products. I have an 01 PT an 06 PT Cruiser convertible and an 04 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4. No problems from any of them.My wife has an 01 Buick Century problem free.

I just used the shop KL recommended for a big repair job and they were great.

I would definitely second the recommendation.
