    Are you currently working?

Just a poll to start the new forum here, are you currently working?

    full time? part time? etc

I am working both FT and PT for 2 different companies right now. FT for my job i have been at over 5 years and PT i guess you could say for a new company I and a partner are trying to get off the ground.

How about you? You don't have to post if you don't want to and the poll is private.

    Re: Are you currently working?

Been at my job going on 10 years. Full time. Been (sort of) looking for part-time work, but not too enthusiastically. I can't afford to give up my weekends right now - have too much going on.

    Re: Are you currently working?

I'm a (never seem to be able to) stay at home mom right now. Counting down the months until I can go back to work. This gig doesn't really suit me. I sold on ebay forever until we moved here. I hated it, but the money is calling my name....might start up again here real soon.

    Re: Are you currently working?

Been an outboard engine tech for 5 1/2 years now has its ups and downs like everything else but the pay is decent for the area, the official benefits are okay and the "unofficial" benefits are pretty damned good too. It pays the bills and I am still pretty happy doing it.

I work full time for a credit card company. The people and the job are both great. We are one of the banks that aren't having a bunch of issues.

    Re: Are you currently working?

Thankfully working full time, yes. Also have my side business (on Amazon/EBay) that keeps me busy when I'm not doing the real job, though I have been slacking with that lately...

    Re: Are you currently working?

I'm a stay at home but worked 10 years in the music industry before that. I'm currently looking to get into something fun.... not sure what that is though.

I volunteer enough to be considered full time with the local school district. I also enjoy doing things for my aging parents.... I have 4 siblings but I'm the only one available to help our parents out regularly. Some one has to do it.

    Re: Are you currently working?

I work as a water plant operator but I also have worked on the wastewater side and it's a good job and very secure. Think about it. It doesn't really matter what the economy does you still have to drink, cook and shit and you'll need me to supply your water and take care of your shit.

As we are experiencing a aging workforce in my occupation, it is an excellent career for someone entering the workforce directly from high school, everyone, even smart people are not college material at least not right out of school.

A basic general understanding of biology, chemistry, hydraulics, mathamatics and mechanics is required. The certifications although different somewhat from state to state, generally require some college level course work, a specific training period, and passing the certification exams. (obviously good spelling is not a requirement lol).

A trainee can expect to make between 25 to 30K to start more or less depending on where you live but advancement in pay and position can come rapidly to a person who applies themselves.

Your not going to get rich but you can expect to live a fairly comfortablr lifestyle and most jobs provide a decent retirement.

The job conditions will vary depending mostly on the age of the plant and on the wastewater side it WILL be nasty at times and you WILL get a little shit on you from time to time. However in 14 years I've only had one really gross shit bath but it can happen. On the water side you can expect to get wet sometimes, you are after all working with water.

Work hours depend mostly on the size of the plant and shift work is not uncommon. You can expect to have a bit independence on the job, I currently work midnight shift and I rarely see my boss and one is expected to make independent decisions so as to leave the higher ups to enjoy their time off but I've rarely seen a supervisor that was contacted get upset because of an emergency that was beyond the operators scope expertice or experience.

As both professions often employ changing technologies you can expect to be constantly learning new stuff and the more you can learn about electronics and newer technologies the better chance you will have to advance.

If after developing an interest in the field, furthering ones education could lead to advancement to a directors level which will bring additional income and responsibility and possibly respect in the community.

    Ah! Almost forgot!

Someone mentioned their daughter was looking for a job which reminded me that plant operations is not a boys club only job anymore. My chief is a woman and a damn good operator (and a even better boss). I've also met women that are utility directors for sizable cities.

If you know someone might be interested in the field please let them know the demand is only going to increase as water resources diminish and the current workforce approaches retirement, and if someone is seriously interested, by all means feel free to contact me via PM and I'll be happy to assist with more info and how to find out about training and educational programs.
