    American Cancer Society Bike-A-Thon

I posted something about this in the Random Musings thread in early June and got such an amazing response and it was requested that I "bump" it so that others could become involved, so here goes:

On July 12, 2009 (rain or shine!), thousands of cyclists will cross the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia to begin the 37th annual American Cancer Society's Bike-a-Thon to raise money for cancer patients and their families in the Delaware Valley. This year, my best friend, Lynn, and I will be two of those participants - Team Girls in Jerseys.

Both Lynn and I have been touched by this horrible disease. In 2005, Lynn lost her beloved stepfather to a combination of small-cell lung cancer and mesothelioma. In 1991, my own dear father died of small-cell lung cancer and in April of this year, my mother lost her battle with the same horrific disease.

We have decided to participate in this ride to honor our parents and all of those who have both fought and won, and fought and lost, against this disease. We will carry with us a list of names of those people we will remember as we ride.

Please visit our fundraising page (through the link below) and consider a donation to the ACS sponsoring us on our journey. Thank you!

    The American Cancer Society:

Through the generosity of so many people, Lynn and I have been able to double our fundraising goal and are aiming to raise $1,000.00.

Thank you to those of you who have given so generously so far! We couldn't have gotten to this point without you!

I just wanted to say "thank you" to all of the TD'ers who helped sponsor us on the big ride today... We finished the ride in about 5.5 hours (which includes rest stops, waiting for stop lights and helping a fellow cyclist fix her flat tire) and raised $1,300 for the American Cancer Society.

I can honestly say that participating in today's ride was one of the most remarkable and wonderful experiences of my life and through your generosity and the generosity of so many others, the riders today raised a huge amount of money to aid in cancer research and in support to those who are affected by this horrible disease.

    Thank you, so very much.

I actually rode right in front of the Fox29 camera as we went up the bridge... I wanted to turn and wave, but I was too busy trying not to get run over by the other 4,499 riders.

    *grins*

And we're still continuing to collect contributions and will do so through the end of the month, so if you would like to donate, please go to the link in the first post!

Witchy, y'all are just awesome, I really mean it. It takes a special kind of person to participate in things like this. The money you raised was terrific, but the awareness is priceless.

Here is a picture of us at the end:

And this is why I ride:

On the left is my father, who died of lung cancer on December 3, 1991 and on the right is my mother, who died of lung cancer April 7, 2009.
