2 Elementary Schools Close Due To Swine Flu

WILMINGTON, Del. - May 2, 2009 (WPVI) -- Delaware Division of Public Health has updated of the cases of H1N1 in the state.

On Saturday, six more cases of swine flu were confirmed in the University of Delaware, bringing the total to 10 confirmed cases.

Two non-UD students have probable cases of H1N1.

One is a student at Baltz Elementary School in Elsmere. Based on the advice of Delaware public health officials, and current guidelines from the CDC, Baltz will be closed on Monday and likely for some period of time after that.

The other student attends First State School, a school of 15 students with special health conditions on the campus of Wilmington Hospital. After consulting with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state public health officials are recommending the school remain open because the students receive medical care at the school. While there is no causal link, students from UD were present at a First State School event Friday, April 24.

Both schools are part of the Red Clay School District. READ MORE

They are definitely over-reacting but no one likes to put their kids in harms way. I'm sure they are doing this just to keep the parents from wigging out. Oh, and a thorough germ killing cleaning isn't such a terrible idea.

They're going to be damned if they do and damned if they don't on this one, so might as well err on the side of caution.

I heard that the median age for this thing is 17. Now, they're asking if older people are unaffected due to previous flu shot immunities. Given this, I'm understanding why such an over-reaction.

Approximately 36,000 people die in the United States every year due to the Flu, be afraid, be very afraid ...

    This, from a CDC report:

The U.S. death toll surged fourfold from 16,263 in 1976-77 to 64,684 in 1998-99, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Flu deaths now average about 36,000 a year, up from 20,000 in previous estimates, the CDC said.

*Not that death is good but, c'mon now.

I posted this in another thread but ABC reported that this particular Swine Flu (H1N1) virus is very similar to the 1957 version. This would give anyone alive then an advantage as they may already have the immunity for it.

America is an idea, but it's an idea that brings with it some baggage, like power brings responsibility. It's an idea that brings with it equality, but equality even though it's the highest calling, is the hardest to reach. The idea that anything is possible, that's one of the reasons why I'm a fan of America. - Bono, Commencement University of Pennsylvania May 17, 2004
