Student's death leads to 6 fraternity arrests

By TERRI SANGINITI • The News Journal • March 27, 2009

Six University of Delaware fraternity members and pledges have been charged in connection with the suspected drinking death last year of an 18-year-old Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity pledge, Newark police said today.

The arrests were made last week.

Brett Griffin, 18, of Kendall Park, N.J., was found unconscious and in cardiac arrest Nov. 8 on the floor at the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity house in the first block of Annabelle St. in Newark.

The fraternity, which Griffin was pledging, had hosted an off-campus drinking party.

Griffin later died at Christiana Hospital of suspected alcohol poisoning. The manner of death was ruled accidental.

“The information leading to theses charges was developed during the investigation of Mr. Griffin’s death,” said Lt. Brian Henry, a Newark police spokesman. “The charges do not imply direct culpability in Mr. Griffin’s death.”

You gotta do some heavy duty drinking to put yourself in cardiac arrest.

You have to know when to stop.. Granted, it really isn't easy in College Town Newark.. I go to plenty of college parties and these guys just don't know when to stop. I'm surprised there aren't more deaths.

My brother in law got alcohol poisoning once - he sat in a chair in our garage, the day of one of our pig roasts and drank a bottle of Jack straight down and grabbed a bottle of vodka for a chaser. We were calling an ambulance within an hour - he wasn't breathing... He never did tell us why he did something so stupid.

Yup....sometimes fratboys can be chuckleheads. However, sometimes I think they get a bad rep. I only heard about this VERY briefly on the news. (I had to get it from a LA station because for some reason ABC 6 and CBS 3 were frozen)

America is an idea, but it's an idea that brings with it some baggage, like power brings responsibility. It's an idea that brings with it equality, but equality even though it's the highest calling, is the hardest to reach. The idea that anything is possible, that's one of the reasons why I'm a fan of America. - Bono, Commencement University of Pennsylvania May 17, 2004
