I have no problem with those who are transgendered. Yup, nature does screw up every once in a while. And I have no problem with two people of the same sex raising a child. There are plenty of children in the world who would love to have one parent who cared about their well-being, let alone two - regardless of their sexual predilictions.
My problem with this article is that we'd like to think, and hope, that someone who is bringing a child into this world willingly (and the gods know, this had to have taken some kind of planning in this instance) would be mentally put-together enough to put their own concerns aside and put that of their child first. However, this guy doesn't seem to have really gotten his own issues under control (sure, you're transgendered, but you're really not at this point, are you?) before electing to do this...
And on a whole other note, why not adopt? And if that isn't a possibility, why not hire a surrogate?

You are either one sex or the other - I don't care which one you pick, but pick one. | People like this, clearly, love the attention. I'm sure the media is all over this and will follow this "guy" around as this pregnancy progresses. As will the medical society, and ethical groups. This "guy" will start debates everywhere and I'm sure "he's" enjoying every minute of it.
I hope "he" doesn't get that label of being the first MAN to give birth because IMO he's not a real man. | | The Following User Says Thank You to hockey For This Useful Post: | |

Maybe because I have a friend who is transgendered, and although in her case she was born a man, I'm trying to imagine the situation with her. I can hypothetically see her using her uhm, left-over man parts to conceive a child if she so desired. I would still think of her as a woman even if she "fathered" a kid.
I don't think that the individual in question is confused. I think that although he stopped taking testosterone to conceive, he still thinks of himself as a male and so does his wife. I'm sure that after the child is born, he'll start his injections back up. He doesn't think of himself as a woman, he thinks of himself as a male with the biological capability to give birth.
More power to him.

I think it does in the traditional sense, yes. But we're not dealing with traditional gender roles here related to biology, so we can't apply the same thinking to it.
I dunno. That's just my take on it.
Just like if an honest to goodness male who was born with all male parts was some how able to carry a child. I don't think this would make him less of a man, it would make him a man who had a child. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
