| | | So, I haven't started a thread in a long time, but I had to post this. Zip is officially my hero. We've been having a bit of a skunk issue around here lately and I guess I never really thought much of it until I left the garage door open the other night and found a baby skunk had wandered in. I slammed the door shut, banged on it for awhile, opened it again and peeked out and didn't see the skunk so I thought I was good.
*do I hear snickering?!*
So tonight I'm taking some bottles out to the recycling bin, both garage doors shut. As I walk back to the house I see the cat food bag rustling..."Oh please God, let it be Elvis. Oh please God, let it be Elvis." and out comes the little black snout with the white line up the middle. Me, the skunk, closed garage doors, skunk between me and the house door.
So I tip toe up to my car, thank God my passenger window was down. I slowly put my hand inside the car and hit the garage door remote (I want to kiss the person who invented garage door remotes) and busted ass out of there.
So, after explaining (hysterically) the situation to Zip he boldly goes into the garage, pull the cars out, and declares the garage clean of skunks...he thinks. So we put the pet food in plastic bins, and while we're doing that we start chucking some stuff that could attract skunks. I figure, eh, while I'm cleaning out...so I grab an ancient bag of quick-crete...Guess who's hiding behind the bag?
Me, screaming and running to the front yard, "I found him!!!!"
Dave to the rescue; he grabs the hose, pulls it into the garage and hoses that s.o.b. down until it runs out from it's hiding spot and takes off into the yard. YAY! Personally, I wanted to leave down some anti-freeze(yeah, eat shit PETA- you live with a skunk in your garage!), but I figured a pet would get it.I think that skunk was probably living in my garage since our first encounter days before. Now I have to figure out how to keep the little shit out.
So, yay for Zip. Thank you sweetie!

| | | Awesome....
Try mothballs around the edges of your house and near the opening of the garage... You already have foods in sealed containers, so that will help - they are coming for food, but since they have gotten food there before, they will keep looking there for a while. I have heard (no personal experience) that mothballs keep them away.

Good decision. Not only would you have killed the skunk, but probably the cat and the dogs. (Note to everyone: Keep all antifreeze away from your pets! The "sweet" taste is alluring to them and consumption of it is fatal nearly 100% of the time.)
This way, everyone survived and Zippy gets to be the hero! Good work! | | The Following User Says Thank You to witchofthedogs For This Useful Post: | | Re: Zippy the great skunk soaker!

So, yay for Zip. Thank you sweetie! Grabs a hose? A real man would have grabbed that little SOB by the tail, smacked it a few times and then bitten the head off.

| | | thata boy Zip, remember though this fact....sneak up from behind on a skunk and simply slip a finger in his anus an inch or two and bending it slightly will immobilize him/her then it all a matter of disposal. Take him/her for a walk down to the park :-)

| | | Once the inside of your house has that smell, or your dog gets sprayed and then rubs all over the sofa (thus bringing the smell into your house), or you can't open your front door for fear of YOU ending up with that smell on you...yup, the sympathy ends there. If I could humanly and gently coax it into a cage and take it out to a wooded area and release it, I would. The problem is that you can't get close enough to coax it into doing anything without getting hit with that God-awful oil that is hell to get off (Thank you makers of Natures Miracle for Skunk odor).
The poor dog's eyes are burning out of his head; he doesn't know what he did. He only barked at something walking in his yard. He didn't even get that close to it (3 - 4 feet away). Murray is about the most gentle, "live and let live" animal I know...if I wasn't so offensive it would have been funny. This little dog with a very confused and hurt, "Ow! What happened?! Why'd he do that?! Ewww!!! Gotta wipe this off! Why'd he do that?!" look about him.
The skunk had to go. Bottom line. And I'd rather spray it out with water and let it run away than pay some guy 150.00 to catch it and do who knows what to it. My guess is he wouldn't be too concerned with it's well being, but I could be wrong. | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to wendy For This Useful Post: | | Re: Zippy the great skunk soaker!

| | | Wendy, no one's condemning you for what you did. You don't need to defend yourself... I was simply joking with Jessica that we'd probably end up with a skunk as a pet by virtue of our knee-jerk, "oh, isn't it cute" tendencies. I apologize if it came off any other way. | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to witchofthedogs For This Useful Post: | | Re: Zippy the great skunk soaker!

Today at 11:59 AM Reply with quote #4You have to trap them in a live trap and take them down the road 10 or 15 miles. Use cat food as bait and when you catch one cover it with a drop cloth so it won't spray. Just walk slowly, holding the drop cloth up so he can't see you and cover the trap. Wrap the cloth around the trap and just put him in the truck. To get him out is a little more tricky. Slowly open the door and slide a stick or rebar in to hold the door open. Then slowly pull the cover off. The key word is slow if you haven't noticed. Sometimes they will run out before you can prop the door open. If this happens just freeze. They usually will stop, turn to look at you from a mere 2 or 3 feet from your face. Never have had one spray doing this, I think because he's leaving and doesn't feel threaten. Just don't move. If you need some more help, you can give me a call.
