NEWARK -- Four "probable" swine flu cases have been identified at the University of Delaware, state health officials announced Tuesday evening.
The four UD students -- none recently traveled to Mexico -- have flu symptoms that meet the probable definitions for swine flu, Dr. Paul Silverman, associate deputy director for health information and science of the Division of Public Health, said in a statement.
As news spread across UD's Newark campus Tuesday night, anxious students flocked to the Student Health Center at Laurel Hall. A sign on the door advised that anyone with a cough or fever must wear a mask to enter, and officials turned away anyone not seeking medical treatment. One student said he was told shortly before 11 p.m. that the wait was three hours.
The State Division of Public Health is submitting samples from the four probable cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to confirm whether they are cases of swine flu. READ MORE.....

| | | Six more "probable" cases of Type A H1N1. I suppose that brings U of D's tally up to ten. I got a message from them today as a member of one of their student/community organizations, and my Mom received a text as a faculty member. I think that, to their credit, they're doing a good job of mobilizing and trying to prevent interrupting the lives and education of students who aren't sick, but I know that if I was a student living in a dorm I'd want to know if someone in my building was sick. No, it can't be prevented if the exposure has already taken place, and yes everyone should be watching out for symptoms regardless, but I'd still like to know if my exposure was more direct than others. Maybe I'd skip class for a week or so. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Jessica For This Useful Post: | | Re: Panic at the frat house, swine flu rockin the UD

Probable means that they have been tested for flu, tested positive for flu virus type A, but tested negative for all known subtypes.
That means that they've pretty much got it. At least 5 out of 10 of them do, most likely more.
Those tests can be a little whacky sometimes and give out false negatives, which is why they label it 'probable' and send samples off to the CDC for a more comprehensive test before saying for sure, "Yes, they have it."
You are only labeled a probable case if you have symptoms, go to the doctor, they swab you, run the tests, it comes back positive for influenza a and negative for all other known subtypes.
Then you're a probable.
And no, the media didn't make it up. Health professionals made it up. 'Cause it makes sense, rather than just label everyone with flu symptoms a "suspected' case at this point. | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to Pythoness For This Useful Post: | | Re: Panic at the frat house, swine flu rockin the UD

| | | I'm irritated that we're going to have to look at "PROBABLE CASES" in red huge letters at the top of TNJ for the next.. however long it takes the CDC to get to those samples. | | The Following 5 Users Say Thank You to Pythoness For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
