Dentist to buy back Halloween treats

No trick, dentist to buy back Halloween treats

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Locust Grove dentist Linda King will buy pencils and pretzels to fill trick-or-treaters’ bags on Halloween night. But when candy corn-red licorice-peanut butter cup bliss strikes back with tantrums and stomach aches a few days later, she’ll pay up to take those sorts of sweets off kids’ (and their parents’) hands.
For the second year, King will buy back Halloween loot or the leftovers that never made it out of the house. She pays $1 for each pound of wrapped sweets, then sends the goodies to military members stationed overseas through Operation Gratitude, a care-package organization online at Operation Gratitude - Welcome to Operation Gratitude. She’s buying back candy from 3-5 p.m. Nov. 3, but says she’ll accept it any time that day.

Last year, she bought about 60 pounds of candy from trick-or-treaters and sneaky parents, she says. (Some parents opted not to take the cash — they just wanted all the sugar to mysteriously disappear.) This year, King might offer up other goodies to encourage the giving spirit, like toothbrushes, cavity-fighting lollipops and coupons from local restaurants.
“Nobody’s really going to miss anything,” King says. “Sometimes, you’re just eating candy because it’s there. We thought, ‘How can we help everybody? How we can help different parents that are sitting there with two tons of candy that sits around till Christmas, Easter?’”
King started her buyback in Locust Grove, just south of McDonough, last year, after she heard about Wisconsin dentist Dr. Chris Kammer’s program. Kammer began buying back candy three years ago and talked up the program among friends and professional groups. This time of year, he hears every day from 10 to 20 dentists looking for details about how it works, said Scott Green, the marketing director for Kammer’s practice.
Kammer’s practice collected about 650 pounds of candy from 200 kids last year. About 300 dentists have signed up for the buyback newsletter, Green said, and so far, 100 have confirmed that they’ll be buying back.
If sugar-lovers must hold on to some of their treats, King recommends they keep chocolate. It melts away in the mouth, reducing the time teeth are exposed to sugar and acids. Plus, it doesn’t tend to last long.
“My husband will buy some peanut butter cups,” King admits. “I think half of them wind up in his pockets.”

Re: dentist to buy back Halloween treats

That's a great idea..
Shit, I'd buy bags and bags of it just to send over there... Because I usually eat the candy she gets on Halloween night..

I buy ridiculous amounts of candy to "give out" on Halloween. My wife's always like, "Why'd you buy so much candy! We never have that many trick or treaters!"

Mind your business, that's why.

Mmmmmmmm....Reese's......

Re: dentist to buy back Halloween treats

Funny you mentioned this...I just read this in the paper yesterday!

Halloween candy buyback offered again

Limestone Dental Associates is offering to buy back Halloween candy again. From 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 4-5, the office at 5317 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, will pay $1 per pound for unopened candy, up to 10 pounds per child.
The collected candy will be sent to troops in Iraq, along with dental supplies. The practice notes that reducing the ingestion of sugar will help children's dental health.
Last year, Limestone Dental collected more than 1,300 pounds of candy. Some participants also donated money to buy phone cards for the troops and to pay for shipping the candy.
For details, call Pam Arzinger at 239-0502.

Re: Dentist to buy back Halloween treats

I think it's awesome theyre doing this for the parents and the kids, but I was appalled at reading that theyre sending it to the troops. What if the kid just hasnt gotten to that that taffy with the needle yet, or the poisoned gumdrop? I took my kids Trick-or-treating, but I was careful where I took them. Not all parents are like that, they just think it's fun to see their kids get as much candy as possble. To be honest, it all still has some sort of risk.

If they have the money to buy back candy, then go to the store and get the halloween stuff thats half price after the holiday and send that.

Our soldiers are taking enough risk already.

All my extra candy goes to my 74 year old dad who eats more candy than a dozen first graders on Halloween night. Can you say Diabetes?

The BEST place to go is Rtite-Aide or Happy Harrys after Halloween (or ANY holiday). 50-75% off all candy and holiday stuff. I love those stores after the holidays, get everything I need for the next year (Except candy of course).
