Re: Americans leery of bicycles despite gas price jump

I don't have a bike, but if I did I'd ride it to work.

My dad has always ridden a bike to work. I don't even think he has a driver's license.

Re: Americans leery of bicycles despite gas price jump

I live close enough to walk back and forth, but for family errands. I need my car. The savings of not commuting are excellent though. I only buy gas once a week. The average i spend in my minivan is about 25-30 bucks a week.

Re: Americans leery of bicycles despite gas price jump

I think the biggest reason why most people are leery of biking to work is because biking anywhere except for a park is dangerous. Nuts on the road routinely tailgate cars for refusing to go 70 in a 45 mph zone; can you imagine what they'd do to a bicyclist?

The only way people are going to be willing to ride bikes on public roads is to make the roads safe for bikes. Being as they aren't even safe for cars, we are nowhere near that point.

Re: Americans leery of bicycles despite gas price jump

I'm not leery of bicycles, I'm leery of riding one up I-95 to get to work. Honestly, I can't even ride mine to the grocery store, because it would mean a trip up Rt. 273, including the I-95 overpass.

No thanks.

I wish I lived in an area where I would walk/bike to all the places I need to go on a weekly basis, but sadly it's just not a reality.

I don't see the words lazy or spoiled.

Re: Americans leery of bicycles despite gas price jump

Now we have the foreign students back riding their bikes back and forth to work.Unfortunately they do not know our traffic paterns and seemingly have no fear.We have had a least 1 killed a year for the past several years. This came to my mind as I passed 3 riders tonight with no lights or reflective clothing on unlit narrow roads.

When I think of how much bike riding I did as a kid, I'm surprized I'm still here.

You and me both, Curly. Now I love my bike... wouldn't trade it. Back then I got a terrible scar on my knee for having a very bad accident on one.

Re: Americans leery of bicycles despite gas price jump

My biggest issue with the bicyclists have to do with the folks who ride through the Brandywine Valley. I know they have every right to be there. I always respect their space on the roads.... it's just those times when you're driving up a hill or around a bend and you can't see them until the last second .

Or even worse.... when a car passes them into your lane and you have to ram the brakes and swerve to avoid a head-on collision.

I don't speed through the valley, I've seen too many deer jump out in front of me. I would have no emotional problems hitting and killing a deer, certainly can not say that about a human life.

There are just too many people (usually younger folks) who drive recklessly through the valley and there are bicyclists, deer, horseback riders (including my daughter) and hikers who are using/crossing these narrow roads.

Please be very careful when driving through the Brandywine Valley especially now that summer is upon us!
