I am not a very Religious person. I was raised a Catholic and am ashamed to say the only time I attend Church is for Funerals and Weddings...in any case I am a Christian. Having said that does anyone besides me ask themselves WHY all this death and destruction is going on in the World around us? Tsunami's, Cyclones, Earthquakes, American's destroying each other.....hmmm is God mad? Is it Karma? Is the End approaching? I have to share this tad of info that I found out. If anyone is familiar with the three secrets the Lady of Fatima bestowed on the children? These secrets are supposedly held under lock and key so to speak at the Vatican. My ex-hubby's grandmom, who is a Catholic Daughter of America, gave me a Bible-I have never read it in it's entirity even in Private School 'cause they only tell the stories they want. It was an old Bible and when I opened it a sheet of paper came out that said December 13, 2012. Since it was 1996 at the time, I asked her about it. She told me that that was suppose to be the end of the world. Anyone else ever hear of this? The more I see the bad things going on in our world one has to wonder our fate, karma and what's going on. Maybe I'm just crazy and that's possible, but it just seems people are not the same (except the good folks-the very small percent of them-all of us included) people are greedy, mean, selfish, uncaring and some people will do anything to get what they want even if it means taking a life. Seldom do I see do unto others. When I do I always praise that person or thank them if it's directed to me. Anyone ever feel the way I do? What is happening to our World? Our Country? Our State? Very very scary.

Re: Death Toll in Chinese Quake at 15,000 and Growing
Chase I agree. I do not know a whole lot about it...I did see a book at Borders called 2012 and almost got it...I didn't even pick it up....but I also heard that is the year of the end of the Mayan Calendar??? Might be interesting to check out......
There is a Mayan prophecy that the world will "change" (not necessarily end) on 12/21/2012. There are varying arguments as to the interpretation of the Mayan prophecy and calendar (as there are for everything).
If you tend to believe in prophecies (think Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce), then you may think the world is going to come to a screeching halt. If you aren't necessarily fatalistic and view it as a potential change in world view, then it is that. If you tend to think in practicalities and think the metaphysical is a bunch of bunk, you're probably going to be making a metric shit ton of money on the Market that day.
*shrugs*
Who really knows for sure?
Every religion has an end-game - a construct that tells the end of the story. For Christians, it's in the Book of Revelation. For Buddhists, it's enlightenment. For many pagans, it's reincarnation. As part of their world construct, a religion, by it's nature, has to create an end (as it did a beginning) to give people an idea of that to which they are striving.
My guess is that the Mayans did the same thing and people are just playing in their sandbox.
ETA: In my personal opinion, the ending of the Mayan calendar is no more the ending of the world than the story of Genesis is the story of the beginning of the world. It is all myth and construct created by humans to give some kind of meaning to their existence - it doesn't make it bad or awful or silly or ridiculous. It just is.
I don't think the Mayans had any more of a bead on what is going to happen in the future than we do.

I had thought I heard somewhere that it was the end of one Galactic age and the begining of a new one. I am going my memory here and I havn't googled this yet but, We are currently in an age of Piscies (sp?) and in 2012, with the earth's position and the position of the rest of the heavenly bodies in space, we will move into the next zodiac era, whatever that might be.
Again, I am not knowledgeable in astrolory and I am going off of memory. I'll have to try to research this more later.

TalkPa.net is about and for Pennsylvania and run by the same people.
If it does end, so what? It will be the day I don't have to hear whining about gas prices and global warming.
