Nebraska law allows abandonment of teens

OMAHA, Neb. - Nebraska’s new “safe-haven” law allowing parents to abandon unwanted children at hospitals with no questions asked is unique in a significant way: It goes beyond babies and potentially permits the abandonment of anyone under 19. While lawmakers may not have intended it, the month-old law raises the possibility that frustrated parents could drop off misbehaving teens or even severely disabled older children with impunity.
“Whether the kid is disabled or unruly or just being a hormonal teenager, the state is saying: ’Hey, we have a really easy option for you,”’ said Adam Pertman, executive director of a New York adoption institute and a frequent critic of safe-haven laws.

Re: Nebraska law allows abandonment of teens

When my oldest son started having problems, serious ones, hitting me, running away, refusing to go for counseling or to get evaluated, trashing my home, laughing at me and walking out the door when I'd say he was grounded, breaking my stuff when I'd take his away, I needed help. But the thought of just abandoning him with a bunch of strangers never crossed my mind, this would not have been an option to me, even if it WERE an option. This is NOT 'help', this is just an easy way out and I think it's the worst thing someone can do a kid at any age. Sometimes it doesnt matter if youre a good parent or not, kids can still develop problems. Instead of abandonment centers, there should be evaluation centers, drop them off there and make the kids get evaluated for chemical imablances, drug use, etc. and make the parents stay involved.

Re: Nebraska law allows abandonment of teens

Another way the gov is helping us dodge our responsibilities.

Why would I want to abandon my teen at the hospital? Can I have the option of going into the woods and just shooting them? That way they won't be a burden on the system.

Re: Nebraska law allows abandonment of teens

I'm all for safe haven laws.

Let's face it...once a kid knows his name and his parent's name, there's not much anonymity in dropping them off.

But for parents who can't deal with infants and toddlers...for the love of God, yes...turn them over to the state. PLEASE.

Re: Nebraska law allows abandonment of teens

I agree Kid, I would much rather see a baby abandoned in a hospital than a trashcan. As far as the teens go, regardless of how freakin' aggravating they can be, I find it highly unlikely that a parent would drop off a teenager. Surprisingly enough, by that age we tend to get kind of attached to the little shits, and for the parents that do drop them off, I'm sure it would be for the best. Obviously someone in that family needs help, either the parent or the child, so it may be in everyone's best interest to separate, at least temporarily.

Did someone change the age of legal majority? Or are you not an adult in Nebraska until your 19th birthday? As far as I know, as soon as you hit 18 you're legally an adult (except for the drinking laws, which were obviously drafted by someone who does not live in the real world).

In Nebraska yes 19 is the age to go from minor to adult

Re: Nebraska law allows abandonment of teens

My oldest begs me to put her up for adoption some days. Yeah, like that would ever happen!! lol She is sooo stuck with me! But on the topic I really agree with Decent and Wendy. Instead of just dropping them off and essentially giving up on them or a relationship with your child, for God's sake offer REAL help for the family, counseling, drug programs, anger management, or just a safe haven for a cooling off period if things are really, really bad. But utter abandonment, that would devastate ANY child, let alone one that was already having problems.
