OTIS, Ore. -- An Oregon couple received a frightening phone call from their son in Afghanistan when he inadvertently called home during battle.Stephen Phillips and other soldiers in his Army MP company were battling insurgents when his phone was pressed against his Humvee. It redialed and called his parents in the small Oregon town of Otis.

wow gun fire sounds really strange on a cell phone, kinda like it's under water. I can't really make out anything that was said though.

Weird. I can hear them pretty well. They drop the f bomb within the first like, 40 seconds.

"What the fck was that?!"

Maybe it's just my training kicking in.

Can you transcribe while people are eating, in the middle of yawning, and talking with a phone ringing right next to the microphone?

Sure. And even over the sound of gunfire!

From everything I've read/heard, Rusty, they were.

Yeah, can you imagine? Once you realize what the hell you're listening to, the only thing you can think of next is, "What if this is the last time I ever hear my son's voice?"

Better not to know.

I hope he didn't get in any trouble for that.
