GREENWOOD, Del.- Delaware State Police on Wednesday night arrested a 46-year-old Greenwood man accused of severely beating a stray husky dog.
Police say that at around 8 p.m. troopers and animal control officers responded to a home on Hickman Road in Greenwood, after a person called 911 to report a man beating a dog with a metal pole.
Witnesses provided information to the police that Ronald L. Smith of Greenwood was observed in the front yard of his home punching a husky dog. The witnesses also told police that Smith was grabbing the dog by its throat and collar very aggressively. Witnesses said that a short time later they observed Smith striking the dog with a metal pole multiple times. Witnesses reported he struck the dog until it collapsed. Afterward, Smith was seen putting a rope around the neck of the dog and dragging the animal behind his home, according to police.
After interviewing the witnesses, police responded to Smith's home and upon walking up to his front door they observed a metal pole with blood on it and what appeared to be animal hair. Furthermore, they also observed blood smeared on the floor of the porch and on the side of the house.
Troopers contacted Smith, who police say appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Smith acknowledged to taking in a stray Husky dog recently, but informed police he gave it away the day before. Troopers began to check the area around Smith's home for the injured Husky.
While checking they observed an area beside the home with footprints and what appeared to be drag marks. After following the drag marks they found several spots of blood on the ground behind the home leading to a wooded area. Troopers searched this area as best as they could but were unable to locate the dog.
During the investigation, troopers recovered clothing from Smith that had what appeared to be animal hair with blood on it. Troopers also observed gray mud on the clothing.
As a result of the investigation, police charged Smith with cruelly or unnecessary kills or injures any animal, a felony and disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. He was released after posting a $1,250 secured bond.

This made me sick to my stomach. I'm wondering, where did he bury the dog?

I'm wondering what kind of dog it really was. I know of two Shiba Inus and one Malamute that have been lost and not recovered so far this summer, and they can range for miles.

I know it says "husky" but "husky" actually isn't a breed name it's a dog type, and lots of dogs fall into the "husky" category. Average person usually can't tell them apart.

Maybe he didn't. The dog might have gotten up and run off. Let's hope so. Let's hope he ran off and somebody who can treat him like an angel finds him.
