Clearwater Beach is definitely still gorgeous (as are most of the beaches on the Gulf Coast) but the character of the city is changing. It used to be affordable and family-oriented (except for Spring Break) and was chock full of mom-and-pop motels. Now they're disappearing and being replaced by high-rises, hotels, and upscale condos. It's getting older and more "snooty" with all the rich folks moving into those million dollar condos. That's part of the reason we bought our beach house in Indian Shores (about 10 miles further down the coast). It's still "old Florida" but within an easy drive to St. Pete and Clearwater for pretty much everything we need.

As far as my favorite beaches, I love pretty much every beach i've been to on Florida's gulf coast (Pensacola Beach, Destin, Panama City, Mexico Beach, Pine Island, Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island, Ft. Desoto, Egmont Key, Longboat Key, Gasparilla Island, Sanibel, etc). The sugar-white sand and blue green waters have no comparison. There's very few places i'd rather be. And of course I can't forget Indian Shores where we have our beach house!

Among other beaches that I like:

Hilton Head Island, SC
Tybee Island, GA
St. Augustine Beach, FL
Doctors Cave Beach, Montego Bay, Jamaica
Negril, Jamaica
Grace Bay, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
Any beach in Hawaii!

We went looking at houses in the Charleston area today and there is a town called Kiawah Island about 25 miles south of the city that we totally fell in love with! It's too far from the city for us but boy it'll be nice come summer. Check it out:

My parents have a place in Clearwater! They love it, and everytime they go I am terrified they won't come back to Delaware. They're threatening to retire down there, which would break my heart, but whatever makes them happy.

Growing up, one set of grandparents had a house in Fenwick and the other had a house in Rehoboth, so both are close to my heart. Lewes is also a great place for families, very calm and quaint. Dewey Beach I left behind with my beer funnel and Ramen noodels in college.

Thanks, I'm glad to be back! I've missed this place as well, I just got so wrapped up in things that I started slacking on the posts. Lots of new faces I see, that's awesome!

10 years ago i would have said Dewey Beach, without a doubt...but now that i am getting old and gray and if I had to choose ONE beach as my favorite, i would make it Avalon, New Jersey. those who have been there know of what i speak.
I have never been to the caribbean, mexico, etc so i can not say one way or the other about those places.

On the Delmarva Peninsula I would have to say it is Assateague Island. It's private and quiet, very peaceful for the body mind and soul...
