I went to the beach this weekend--actually two--Rehoboth and Ocean City, New Jersey. The water was really rough and waves were huge--HUGE--at both locations!

In Rehoboth yesterday the wave were so big that as the tide was coming in the water was reaching up to about ten feet from the fence. By 4 p.m. most people were off the sand and on the boardwalk b'c there was no place to lay without getting wet. I've never seen it like that.

I've been at the beach for so many hurricanes... I've seen it all. I was evacuated once to the Rehoboth Fire Station for a hurricane one year. We were looking out the windows to see big waves breaking over and over on the Avenue.

Sounds like a storm was out there somewhere and if you combine that with the random erosion on various DE beaches, a full moon and you have no sand to sit on.... or worse, sea water coming over the dunes.

I love those big waves though!
Did you get pics?

No. Forgot my camera. About the time we got there two lifeguards were rescuing a woman who was caught in the rip current. Wild, huh?

Apparently, a few people died at the Jersey shore. The currents caused by Bertha were strong, or something.

We were down in Virginia (on the Chesapeake Bay side), and it was really calm. It was my first time down there and I was surprised at how different it was for not being very far away.

Thanks I was going to post that. We were at Cape Hatteras on Sunday and the waves were brutal and washing up on the beach too because of Bertha.

We go to Virginia Beach every year because it's so different from the beaches around here. The kids can go out really far and the waves are usually much calmer. We actually got caught on the north side of the bridge 4 years ago due to a hurricane w/60+ miles an hour winds. The ride over the bridge SUCKED but when we got onto the beach later that night the waves we not that bad. There is no sudden drop off down there either. I really love going and the ride only takes 4-5 hours. Plus there is a lot to do down there. I haven't been to any of our "local" beaches in over 6 years, since we bought our time share in Virginia Beach.

We were in Cape Charles, which is still north of the Bay Bridge. It was wonderful, and very secluded. We never actually made it down to Va Beach - maybe next year!! Is VA Beach very crowded?

We go the third week in August every year because that's the week we own at our complex. I personally love it because just about everything is 50% off in the stores since it's the end of the season. And the beach itself is so long that it's really never that crowded. I think around the south end near the actual pier (about 16th street I think) is a little more crowded than the north end where we stay. But I like it too that on the beach are all hotels, no stores, so at night it's really quiet. All the shops are on the street behind the hotels that runs parallel to the beach. They have a great trolley system that runs all over the area, even to the mall, so if you don't want to walk or drive you can get a pass for that or ride one way for $1. Virginia Beach also closes down certain cross streets every night and hires different entertainers to perform, like jazz, performance art, magicians, and all kinds of stuff. And there are 2 outdoor concert areas. It's just a great family place IMO. There is also the aquarium, a water park, motocity (go carts tracks), theaters, and comedy clubs, that the trolley will take you to. Bush Gardens and Williamsburg are about 45 minutes away by car. We took the kids to the anniversary of Jamestown last year and it was really cool, I was surprised how much my kids enjoyed it. I like having the time share too because we have a definite vacation every year and once it's paid for you own it for life and we can deed it to our kids when we die. It works really well for us.
